I'm not in academia so maybe someone can explain why the endowment matters. I know having more is better, but once you get over a certain amount what impact does it have? The schools never touch this money right?

I think it speaks to financial security but other than that, I don't think it has much impact on basketball. Harvard has like the largest endowment, obviously, they aren't investing a ton of it in basketball.
