A potential Butler dilemma

Postby butlerguy03 » Fri Jan 04, 2013 9:04 pm

I was reading comments on ESPN's reporting of the C7 meeting and noticed people calling Butler "Catholic."

Nothing against the Catholic faith, but this could end up being a dilemma that causes Butler to not join the group if all other schools are Catholic or Jesuit.

As an alum of Butler, I now find myself correcting people all the time when they lump us into "Catholic institutions."

Yeah, that's just silly.

And I graduated in 99.

Anyway, from everything I've heard they already have agreed in principle

That's one reason I posted this to see how other Butler fans feel.

Why would anyone care? What exactly are you out in correcting someone once.

Anyway, I don't know anyone who don't know butler is non-parochial so I doubt it'll be much annoyance for you

I can see how this would be frustrating for non-Catholic Butler supporters, but in reality almost no schools advertise their religious affiliation and so many people are confused.

I took a tour of Georgetown as part of a summer program in DC many years ago, and the only thing I remember indicating a Jesuit heritage was a statue of the Virgin Mary that we walked past. I had forgotten about that heritage until I was back on campus in 2010 and saw the statue.

The fact is that the Holy Land has decided to be all-private, all-basketball, and all-eastern. There are not many quality basketball programs matching that description who are not Catholic.

I've not heard anyone call Butler a Catholic school, although plenty are calling the departed schools the Catholic 7. If Butler has such concerns, they can always stay in the A10.

Obviously it's not a real issue. I'm sure there's things they'll have to work through, but something that superficial wouldnt be one of them.

The new league could be called "The suck it Butler league" and Butler would still accept an invite to join. This is a non-issue.
