Rumor of 10 team league in 2013

Unless someone's source is a university president I think we can all assume there is a little truth and false in every report on the net including the reporters. That said, reporters going on record with their source's words hold a little more cred with me than someone saying something over a Christmas party punch bowl.

But around the punch bowl is where people start spilling secrets.

And they start passing diseases!

I kind of thought that Fr. Biondi was the biggest force keeping them in the A10 because he wanted east coast exposure. I know that Majerus had spoken out several times about wanting to move SLU to the MVC.

That's been the case in the past, but I think the cost rising would be enough to cause him to change his mind. That said, he's kind of losing his common sense so who knows. As far as Majerus, I think that was his way of arguing for a bigger travel budget.

I think the league will be 12 teams for inventory purposes. Ten teams will not provide as many quality matchups AND an 18 game schedule hurts the league RPI.

10 vs 12 seems to be the main question right now. If it's 10 that is fine with me unless you can add two more teams that are regulars in the NCAA tournament.

I've been told by someone at Marquette who knows what is going on that the 7 Big East schools along with Xavier Butler and Dayton will begin as a 10 team league in 2013. The reason is a desire to remain East Coast focused at first. He said the long term plan is to add Creighton and St Louis within 3 years and likely Gonzaga and St Marys. BYU was also mentioned as a possible addition at some point if the league added West Coast schools.

Gulp. I sure hope your source is in error.

What about that scenario would be so awful to constitute a gulp? Notre Dame ain't walkin' through that door. Unless you want Creighton and Gonzaga immediately, this seems like best-case to me.

If Butler, Xavier, and Dayton all leave the A10, I wouldn't be surprised if SLU joined the MVC because Fr. Biondi didn't want to spend so much on travel with Duquesne being the closest A10 opponent.

Majerus did this to tick off Fr. B, because he cut back on promised charter flights. Trust me, if Rick Majerus was alive today he'd have contacted every coach in the Big7 and ESPN lobbying for SLU to get in. He intimated on several occasions he didn't see how the Big East was going to stay together with the losses of their FB schools.

Actually, I think the guy from SI has it; X, Butler, Creighton, Dayton, and SLU for a 12 team league due to increased shots at Dance invites. Which I gather is more important than size of TV markets. Because outside of MU, Nova, and GU the other 4 have not been seen much at the NCAA in recent years.

Everything has been so quiet on these rumors. I have to wonder if that's because the religious institutions were closed for the holidays. With the presidents meeting looming hopefully we will get some news trickling out.
