Though unable to lift Gaffney to a state title in his senior season, L.J. Peak left a lasting memory of his brilliance on the hardwood with Gaffney fans and those of opponents through dazzling performances night after night....Soaking his mother’s shoulders with tears as he departed the court for the final time in a Gaffney uniform, a large contingent of Tribe fans hovered around the team’s locker room, hoping to get a final glance at one of their own — an S.C. hoops legend and potentially a star in the making.
Proving the heart of a champion, Peak fought valiantly against defending Class 4A champion Irmo, virtually trading baskets in a brave attempt to reverse a fate that almost seemed inevitable. Though not the desired result, Peak’s 49 point performance in his final game may have proven to be his best, a memorable conclusion to the career of one of the most talented players to ever grace a S.C. basketball court.
