Do we want to be called the "Big East"

Marketing people will tell you that the name "big East" has monetary value, but I think that I would like for the new league to start completely fresh. Along with the old name comes the present connotation of instability.

I think we should choose a new name symbolic of the collection of teams. The history of the schools doesn't change. We can still use video of Nova over G'Town for the national title as our league's history, but mix in Butler playing Duke for the new era. I think it would be a disservice to almost everyone to still use Big East when this is really the start of something very new and exciting.

Yes. It's valuable because of the name recognition in the public. Most people probably wouldn't even realize the BE7 were the ones that split if they get the name. It's instant credibility with people without invested interest. It would ring as a win for basketball over football.

It might not be the most important thing in all of this, but they can't throw the issue away. It's like staking a claim to whose conference the Big East was.

I've been struggling with this issue from the beginning.

I think the name has some value on the east coast and to the BE 7.

Outside of the east coast and the BE 7 however, I think the name falls somewhere between "damaged goods" and an outright joke.

I think it would be nice to keep the name, but I have a hard time seeing that the name is worth paying some huge fee to obtain. If we don't end up with the name, I don't think it is that big of a deal. I certainly hope that we aren't spending a ton of time on this issue.

Yes we want to be called the Big East. The name isn't damaged from a basketball perspective.

If we can't get the Big East, then we need to use the word Elite in our conference name and stay away from numbers.

That just rolls of the tongue perfectly. "Elite East", I am loving it.

Elite and similar types of words come off very badly. Elite East would make me cringe. You don't call yourself elite, you will get slammed in the public eye for labeling yourself that way. ...rightfully so. The B1G has been one long joke concerning Legends and Leaders. Simple descriptors are the best way to go, don't give people a reason to scoff at you because of the name you choose for yourself.
