More national providers across multiple platforms. We are still apparently talking with CBS too.

We will definitely get a significant bump in pay and even more exposure. Can't wait to see the financials and length.

Big East will need a media bump just to break even after the increased NIL lawsuit payouts are figured in.

We were going to get a bump prior to UConn joining. With how many networks are involved, and with the current valuation of sports properties, I'm going to guess it ends up being somewhere between $9 and $12 million per member for 7-9 years.

Hmmm...

Great stuff Tom (WBR), excellent find.

While your projected numbers are an increase, they do not reflect the fact that BEast Men's Basketball is currently top tier/Tier 1 hoops content, worth approx. $270K/game. Last time (2013) we got Tier 4 money for our content $138-150K/game.

Here we are 4 NCAA Basketball Championships later; continuing to put great product on the court. I expect the BE to get somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 Million x 6 years. Roughly $83.3M per year, with an expandibiity clause for UConn and the 3-4 new teams from the imploding ACC. Works out to be $8.33Mill/per team annually, for the Media Rights contract only.

Let's hope that GW!!'s take (below) comes to pass (gladly take 9 - 12 Mill/per school annually). However, I doubt the league will want to tie itself up for more than 6-7 years given the current trends by the other conferences. In earlier discussions (conf realign, etc., 2018 - 2023) i also put forward high end guesstimates of 9-11 Mill/per school. Such a range would be outstanding and a incentive for the 2024-25 ACC castoffs (ND, Duke, S'cuse, & maybe Pitt or Wake Forest) to come aboard. There should be a clause to up the ante moneywise, with 'needlemovers' such as ND & Duke coming in (an additional 93-120 additional games).

I like your breakdown Tom. I'd tweek it a bit...
Fox 40% 133 games, CBS 10% 30 games, TNT & NBC 25% each - 86 games each.

This rumored package also includes WBB, which the original deal did not. Another example of UConn not only helping itself by leaving the American, but also helping the league too (with their brand in WBB too). I also think CBS purchases a small package of games, which should increase the overall value as well.

With this package spanning multiple national networks (Fox, FS1, TNT/MAX, NBC/Peacock and, likely, CBS, the demand is clearly there where it is no longer likely to be a "small" bump. The demand for live sports content is at an all-time high, and by the NBA leaving TNT, it opened up a huge number of windows that they needed to fill. This will have worked out perfectly (along with the addition of UConn) to the Big East.

The Big East is on the cusp of formally signing a new set of six-year media rights pacts as soon as this week with Fox, NBC and TNT that will begin with the 2025-26 school year (taking it through the 2031-32 term), sources tell SBJ. Financial terms were still being finalized at presstime, but sources noted the conference will see a significant rights fee uptick. Fox and CBS have one more school year remaining on a 12-year, $500M deal with the Big East (an average annual value of around $41.67M).

Fox will continue as the lead “A” network in the new deal, as it had previously when it initially signed on with the Big East prior to the 2013-14 school year. Sources tell SBJ the rankings for selections of games have already been decided among the conference’s new media partners.

CBS, which had long been a Big East partner, will not return with the conference, as the sides were not able to carve out a smaller fourth package of rights, per sources.

Representatives from Fox, NBC, TNT and the Big East each declined comment when reached by SBJ.

The Big East’s media deal was critically important to the league’s long-term future as the college landscape continues to shift dramatically amid the potential for revenue sharing and the outsized impact football continues to have on the industry.

The Big Ten ($1.1B) and SEC ($710M) both received massive media rights bumps in their latest negotiations on deals that are each worth north of $7B over their lifetime. The College Football Playoff, too, received an extension on its original deal with ESPN worth $1.3B annually starting in 2026.

The CFP’s extension will also share revenue unequally among the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC in a twist likely to see the financial chasm between the Big Ten and SEC over the rest of their counterparts continue to grow.

The Big East, which does not sponsor football, thus exists in a tricky in-between amid college sports’ power structure. The new media deal represents a step toward increased stability, as has the conference’s recent run of success in men’s basketball (The Big East has won four of the last eight national titles). That said, the framework settlement in the House, Hubbard and Carter antitrust cases figures to hit those schools sans big-time college football hard.

The framework agreement as currently constructed calls for non-Power Five schools to shoulder 35% of the nearly $2.8B owed in back pay to former college athletes over the next decade. The NCAA (42%) and Power Five (23%) will shoulder the rest of the load, despite most industry sources suggesting Power Five athletes will receive more than 90% of the almost $2.8B.

Those specific terms led to ample frustration from those in the 28 D-I conferences outside the Power Five, including opposition from Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman at the time. Those sentiments have continued to percolate in recent weeks as lawyers iron out details before Judge Claudia Wilken will eventually rule on the settlement likely later this year.

“We're way too early in this process, but there's been enough discussion about hard decisions that’ll have to be made,” a non-Power Five source told SBJ last month. “And if it comes back to hard decisions have to be made that negatively impact our student athletes’ experiences and opportunities because [The Power Five] didn't want to take on an additional amount that was a fair, rational amount, then shame on us as an industry.”

The college media market, too, figures to settle down in the wake of the Big East deal. Each of the Power Four conferences is locked into long-term deals, though ESPN could technically opt out of its contract with the ACC over the coming years.

The Mountain West is the next FBS conference due for a new deal as its current six-year contract with ESPN runs through 2025-26. The league previously received an almost 300% increase in value between its deal that concluded in 2020 and the current iteration worth $45M.

For the Big East, the new media deal gives the league stability – at least through the next six years. What happens beyond that in college sports, though, is anyone’s guess.

Non-Power Four league media deals nearing expiration:
• Horizon League (deal with ESPN ends after 2025-26)
• Mountain West (deal with CBS and Fox expires after 2025-26)
• Conference USA (deals with CBS and ESPN end after 2026-27)
• West Coast Conference (deal with ESPN ends after 2026-27)

We received an AAV of $4.1 million for 12 years having broken away from football schools and having lost other programs like Syracuse, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Louisville and West Virginia. That was also before the league won four national championships, getting UConn back, seeing the rise of programs like Creighton, Xavier, Providence and Seton Hall on a national level and getting big name coaches like Hurley, Pitino, Miller, Smart, McDermott, Cooley and Matta. Oh, and our new package also includes women's basketball, including UConn Women - a national brand. When I see "significant", I'm not reading that as a slight bump by a million or two.

I think $7 is on the low end, with potential to reach $9/$10 million at the end of the deal. Can't wait to see the final figures.

https://www.sportico.com/business/media/2024/big-east-media-rights-deal-fox-sports-nbc-tnt-1234785885/

Sportico reports that "the conference nearly doubling its annual rights payments at a range of $75 million to $80 million per year." That would come out to $6.8 to $7.3 million over the duration of the deal. I would guess that it starts at $6.8 million (2026) and concludes with $7.3 million (2032). If we continue to operate that the basketball value of a TV deal is valued at 20% of its total, ~$7 million per member per year puts us firmly in the same range as the Big 12 and ACC; however, the Big 12 has their current TV deal end in 2031, where the ACC runs through 2036. I would expect the Big Ten, SEC and Big 12 to all attempt to poach ACC schools (assuming FSU and Clemson are gone in the next 12 months) in 2030. I would predict, given that there aren't infinite spots in each of those conferences, that - after the B1G and SEC gobble up what they want - the Big 12 will have its pick of several valuable (to them) properties that remain. I only share that because its quite possible UConn is not pulled in by the Big 12, because it has the opportunity for other properties (namely, Louisville, Miami, Pittsburgh, etc.). It's also possible that schools like Syracuse and Boston College are left behind, which puts them in the exact same position UConn was in previously.

Anyways, plenty of time to worry about that later. For the next several years, the Big East is locked and secured financially. A great day to celebrate.
