That's probably a pretty important idea with the new Big East. Fox probably wants to make money.

A general sports network, especially one with the Fox brand name attached to it, will always command more than a channel focused on a single sport that isn’t football. Even before the announcement, word got out that Fox would be asking pay TV providers for a carriage fee of 90 cents to a dollar per month for Fox Sports 1 – a big jump from the quarter or so per month Speed currently gets from roughly 87 million subscribers.

First time I've seen specifics on the amounts. Not to sound like a complete shill, but as Big East fans, we need to do whatever we can to make sure the channel is available everywhere and support the network.

Sooner or later there will have to be push back, by either the cable operators or consumers or both. As these issues and the pricing structure become more known, people will eventually say that there are channels that they just don't want to pay for. For now the cable operators will try and control what they pay to the networks and keep all the money from the subscribers. I'm all for supporting the Big East, but I don't have that same desire of the B1G, SEC, or ACC. And the way the pricing is now, I'm paying in conflict with my self-interests (my cable payment supports the B1G, and their enlarged war-chest hurts the Big East).

The industry won't listen to consumers. Maybe Congress will eventually get involved. And the the industry will then be screaming about too much government interference.

Anyone with cable is paying for channels they don't want. Choosing individual channels would result in something along the lines of customers having less channels for a similar price. The system is easily to complain about (it is kind of backwards), but it isn't so simple as you getting overcharged on channels you don't want.

Fan you are right. Push back is inevitable there are several lawsuits going on right now on this particular issue. I've been harping on this point for a while the bundling is where the sports stations make their money. The crazy thing is that the rates change city to city. and in areas with Fox Sports Regionals they will be bundled with those. Hence why i think Dayton and Slu will eventually be 11-12. Both cities will allow for Fox to bundle and price up the Fox Regional as well. St. Louis fans won't let them dark out cards games so they will pay even more for the Fox stations, and same goes with the Fox Ohio world. Having more local teams on the card allows for fox to increase prices. This bundling also includes rates for all the new FX stations as well. Money is now made by house hold rather than any ratings. They dont need you to watch the programs, you already have paid for them.

An excellent point. Live sports is just about the only place you can get people to watch commercials anymore.

It seems to me that the CBS and NBC sports networks are dead. Fox Sports 1 had better have a longer shelf life.
