Some Long-Ago Seton Hall History...

Postby billyjack » Wed Jul 12, 2017 11:49 pm

I spent some time putting together information on Seton Hall going a ways back. The Hall had an outstanding run over 15 to 20 to 25 years. Just thought it was cool.

SETON HALL:
1940 thru 1946: Seton Hall was 71-7.
1947 thru 1948: Seton Hall was 42-7.
1951 thru 1953: Seton Hall was 80-12.

Combine these three chunks of time over 9 seasons, and Seton Hall was 193-26, with an NIT Championship, and NIT Semi, and 4 NIT's... records below are from 1939 thru 1963, so 25 seasons:

1939: Seton Hall 15-7.
1940: Seton Hall 19-0.
1941: Seton Hall 20-2. NIT Semi's.
1942: Seton Hall 16-3
1943: Seton Hall 16-2.
---> Ok, a 5-year run of 86-14.

1944: WW2.
1945: WW2.
1946: WW2.

1947: Seton Hall 24-3.
1948: Seton Hall 18-4.
--> 6-year run of 113-14

1949: Seton Hall 16-8.
1950: Seton Hall 11-15.

1951: Seton Hall 24-7, NIT Semi's.
1952: Seton Hall 25-3, NIT.
1953: Seton Hall 31-2, NIT Champs, could be considered a National Title.
--> 3-year run of 80-12, and a 15-year run of 220-49.

All this time, playing high profile games at MSG.

continuing on, it thins a little.
1954: Seton Hall 13-10.
1955: Seton Hall 17-9. NIT.
1956: Seton Hall 20-5. NIT Quarters.
1957: Seton Hall 17-10. NIT.

1958: Seton Hall 7-19.
1959: Seton Hall 13-10.
1960: Seton Hall 16-7.
1961: Seton Hall 15-9.
1962: Seton Hall 15-9.
1963: Seton Hall 16-7.
Slowing down the last 10-years, but 3 more NIT's and only 1 losing season, and 54 games over 500 in this span.

In the early 60's, a point shaving scandal set them back to 500 for a decade or so.

The early 60's stats jogged my memory - what the hell ever happened to Nick Werkman?

And all of Billyjack's research was predicated by an ignorant "Seton Hall is just lucky to be in the Big East, or else they'd be in the MAAC or A-10. They never had any success before the Big East" comment.

Great work! Very cool to see it all put together.

Thanks GW.

Yes, that's exactly what happened at the other site. I try to avoid posting anything there anymore, but a couple of guys just make shit up, then people believe them, and no one double-checks their misstatement, page after page of continued discussion goes by without any correction, and it just pisses me off.

Seriously, how hard is it to look up Seton Hall's historic record? Or Creighton's? Or Georgetown's. Or DePaul's. 4 clicks takes me to each team's page... 2 more clicks gives me every Creighton game result from 1974, etc...

i guess their goal is to just continually downplay the Big East... with non-stop fantasy wishes completely disconnected from reality.

Also, we should have historic threads for each of our teams... maybe i'll peck away at it. Each of us has been a national powerhouse at one time or another. Would be fun to see.

Ah thanks, so more just ignorance than bashing. I half expected it to be our old friend Lavinwood, who I remember spewing that crap around here a while back. Either way, appreciate you coming to The Hall's defense!

Even though that poster was being ignorant they are partly right. If Rutgers says yes, Seton Hall doesn't get the initial invite and winds up in the A-10 and who knows how the rest turns out. No PJ no NCG. Totally different path.
