IF TRUE, Georgetown has immediately vaulted to the VERY top my go f#ck yourselves/top rival/sh#tlist.

There is NO defending this if true, and Gtown fans should not try to justify something so eggregiously slimy and underhanded. Just reverse the roles and see how you would feel.

I seriously doubt that an undisputed version of this will emerge, but the Cincinnati press is treating the rumor as true, while the Casual Hoya dismisses it.

Chris Mack Turned Down Georgetown And A Ton Of Money – Cincinnati vs. Everyone - April 1, 2017
Image

Chris Mack just turned down an offer that would have doubled if not tripled his yearly salary from Xavier. He made the right decision too.

Georgetown is no longer a desirable job to any coach that already has a pretty decent gig. Chris Mack has a way better job at Xavier than the job at Georgetown would have been for him. Sure money is a nice thing but there comes a time when even the money can’t cover up the problem. Xavier, while it pays less is a better program at this moment and Mack is going to ride that momentum. He has good recruiting classes, he has great facilities and he has a university that is backing him 100%. Georgetown is a toxic situation with a team that isn’t as good as the rest of the Big East with no turnaround in sight.

Three coaches have no publicly turned down the Hoyas job. That’s a slap in the face to Georgetown who still view themselves as a blue blood program. Unfortunately for them you can only live off the past for so long.

Hiring a head coach from a conference rival is not unprecedented. Jim Baron was head coach at St. Bonaventure for 9 seasons (1992-2001) before he accepted a more lucrative offer from Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island, where he coached the Rams for the next 11 seasons (2001-2012) until he was fired after a 7-24 (4-12) season and a 13th place finish.

Indiana's top two choices were Brad Stevens and Billy Donovan. Both quickly said no and wished to continue coaching in the NBA. After that, they went to the Mack/Holtmann/Miller grouping. Mack and Holtmann were still in the process of making runs in the tournament, where Miller lost his first and only game. Miller was a good hire, no doubt, but it's clear that he wasn't their top choice.

Ah, so you were the other guy in the room with AD Fred Glass. Pretty cool that he confided in you. Congrats on the scoop. All of the IndyStar sports writers missed this, but you nailed it. DUDE, you are on fire!

This is more or less exactly how I understand things happened.

One reason Mac was ahead of Miller is because of years of success Mac has had recruiting in Indiana. Miller does not have the Indiana relationships.

Crean Interested in Georgetown? - ESPN Interview - March 31, 2017
Crean and Georgetown not a fit? Tom Crean says his firing from Indiana hasn't sunk in yet and doesn't think Georgetown has interest in offering him its head coach job.

Done deal?

One source said that the Hall-of-Famer has already been interviewed multiple times by Georgetown and was continuing to gather more information about being a college head coach in the Big East. A separate source said that Ewing would be the choice of John Thompson Jr.

There is no question that Patrick Ewing should be able to recruit at a high level. He brings instant credibility and might be able to keep TW in the fold. The question is whether he can coach at this level. I obviously don't know that answer, but it would be a gamble for Georgetown! An associate head coach in the pros doesn't always translate well to college. A different skill set is needed for a mostly different level of players.

How is it a "no brainer," as that's what you're conveying, Ewing will be able to recruit at a high level? IMO, he'll probably be able to recruit on the same level as JT3. If that's "high level," you're speaking of, then I agree. If you're speaking of "high level," ala the blue bloods, then I don't agree. Most of those same kids will still spurn the advances of many and head to the blue blood schools when it's all said and done.

I also agree with you, in Georgetown would be taking a gamble bringing in Ewing. Frankly, it's another JT2 legacy and more of the same since JT2 retired nearly 20 years ago. But, it could work out for the program. If it doesn't, then this could be the move that really sets them back longer than they'll realize.

Ewing to interview with Georgetown on Monday. Not sure the school needed to hire a search firm to land on Ewing. I'll take him over the other name frequently mentioned- Amaker.
