If we're being truthful about this travel business, and this is abundantly obvious, we also have to take time zones into consideration. Traveling from NYC to Miami obviously is done in the same time zone. You pop out of LaGuardia on your way to the Pac NW and it's a 3 hour adjustment.

Basketball traveling isn't a big deal. Soccer, softball, women's lacrosse? Those are. The cost would really be astonishing when you consider the olympic sports having to schlep from Providence to Washington all year round.

It's impractical for Gonzaga who would have to fly several hours for every road game. It's not as bad for everyone else. One road game per year at Gonzaga isn't a big deal for any sport. It's definitely not an issue for track, cross country, tennis, and other sports that don't do a round-robin but just have one conference tournament at the end of the season.

I should have been more clear. It is impractical for Gonzaga to have all of their teams travel so far for all of their away games. For the rest of us, it is no different than an OOC west coast trip.

Agree. And that's a valid issue. But that's not what Val talked about or even hinted at. She talked about cost, and I don't get why cost should be an issue.

No, they really don't. It's still only one trip per team, and only for those that involve a regular schedule of games.

Gonzaga would only have to join for about 6 sports, and several sports like, golf, track, etc involve only one league tournament for the sport, not a regular schedule of inter-school competitions.

Agree, bit Gonzaga isn't the one complaining. They said from the beginning that they'd make it work. I think that the smart thing to do for basketball in a league that included Gonzaga would be to schedule as many Gonzaga games as possible involving East Coast a schools during intercession to minimize the impact of long travel during on academics.

The Big East could easily schedule a scheduling alliance with both Gonzaga and St Mary's. Send those two schools east for two games against two teams in a year (i.e. Villanova & Georgetown), and then send two teams west (Creighton & Marquette) to give them four games per year.

Send those two WC schools east for two games against two teams in a year (i.e. Marquette & Xavier), and then send two BE teams west (Seton Hall & Georgetown) to give them four games per year. Better to have those WC teams traveling to the midwest portion of the league and have EC teams trek to Moraga and Spokane, as it is well known that our BE East Coast teams are stronger and more apt to win on the road.

What's the deal with Siena anyway? We walked their campus last summer. Really nice, north of Albany. Small campus. Small student body. Somehow they get 6k+ to the Times Union. UAlbany is closer to downtown and gets half that.

Went to the Siena-Manhattan game yesterday. Got into a conversation with a guy who is a SUNY Albany alum, so I asked him why Siena draws so much better than U Albany does up there. He shrugged and said it's just the local culture. Maybe similar to how PC basketball evolved over the years as compared with URI?
