SLU had a golden opportunity when Rick passed and blew it. Crews did an admirable job as interim and agreed to stay on-that was SLU's mistake. Those teams were high on talent and almost assured NCAA appearances which they made and then half time and post game interviews with corn pone Crews. No kids are going to play for a guy that dresses like Bob Barker and talks like a hick.

Val was asked about expansion last night at the Xavier game.

You can read the whole quote in here: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/ ... /80922404/

But to summarize, they aren't looking to expand.

pretty interesting quote with regards to the Big 12:
And I would say generally it’s a quiet time in college athletics after a tumultuous couple of years that led to this configuration. I would say generally things are quieting down. If the last few years were seismic, I don’t see that happening for a while, that kind of level of seismic activity,” Ackerman said.

Interesting read on the Big 12 expansion rumors. Reads as if Boren is out for OU's own good irregardless of what else happens to the league. It's pretty clear Boren and Ackerman aren't talking.

Val was 100% right with her comments, just like a majority of fans on the board have said for months and months - there is no school or program out there worth adding. The round-robin is a huge, huge advantage for the Big East, and it will not be devalued just for the sake of adding programs that do not add value to the Big East. NCAA Tournament committee values it, the media loves, the fans love it and the coaches love it.

Slightly off topic, but I have absolutely been impressed with the work she has done thus far as commissioner. Much better than Mike Aresco.

http://www.foxsports.com/college-basketball/story/no-5-xavier-beats-no-1-villanova-proves-new-big-east-alive-and-well-no-longer-afterthought-022416

If the college basketball universe has a geographical center, if there is a cradle for the game that Dr. James Naismith invented 125 years ago, it is here, in the home of Oscar Robertson. Cincinnati is a place that’s surrounded by college basketball superfans of all stripes, with Big Blue Nation to the south and with millions of Hoosiers to the west and with Buckeyes all around. It is a place that has one of the most heated rivalries in all of college basketball, with the city’s two big-time teams separated by only three miles.

And so perhaps it is appropriate that it was here, on a rainy February night 37 years after Dave Gavitt founded the regal old Big East Conference, when the nation finally woke up to the new Big East Conference.

It was a game that ought to be a totem of respect for the revamped Big East: No. 5 Xavier 90, No. 1 Villanova 83. A high-level basketball game featuring two teams that any sensible college basketball fan would call Final Four-capable in this wide-open season.

Think back a few years ago when the big announcement was made and the Presidents went to NYC for the splash meeting with FOX and MSG. Think about what we were thinking about then.

Look at what we've accomplished sense.

And look at where we're headed - - it appears as though we're clearly heading in a positive direction.

Who in their right mind believes expansion is a good idea? And yes, there isn't a basketball-centric program out there that is worthy of being added to this conference.

No, of course they aren't RIGHT NOW. Once we get closer to the end of our TV deal then they will.

How do you know they'll definitively expand once we get closer to the end of the Fox contract?

Only because Villanova would likely veto, though somewhat foolishly in my opinion. Same with the Dayton-Xavier situation. Those rivalries are already huge and could become national must-see TV with Big East conference implications. I know there's a lot of interest in adding new media markets, but it could also be beneficial to double down on some of the ones the league already has. They already have 2 teams the NYC-metro area (I can't wait for both SHU and SJU to be good at the same time), and doing the same in Philadelphia and Cincinnati (is Dayton considered part of the same media market?) would give the league a stranglehold in those two markets.

I don't think it's a bad idea at all.

It's not just the markets...St. Joe's just isn't a very good school. It probably isn't even a safety school for most Nova students.

The Big East wants schools that are academically strong and financially sound. As opposed to the constant Dayton discussion, St. Joes is neither. They'd probably be better off with Drexel.
