I don't think I ever said 3 bids last year. I was just going thru some stuff end of Dec and I was like we'll get 4 in, but a lot more comfortably than last year. What I missed was the 7 top 50's going into the BE season.

look at these KP ratings:
2014 ranks 8,15,32,39,44,52,56,69,121,132(before Dec 31)
last year ranks 6,16,28,30,37,41,50,79,103,204 (before Dec 31)
this year ranks 4,9,29,46,47,53,58,74,166,177 (this morning)

where last year was different was having 7 top 50 teams.
2014 when we got 4 in with 1 PIG and other only as BET champ- had 5 top 50, plus 52,56
this year have 5 top 50, plus 53,58

where I think this year is different is that the top 2 teams are better.

Yes and we were 9-4 with that #167 ranked ooc. No I didn't forget the Big 5 games we play them every year, pretty hard do to, that ooc still sucked. Can you be more disingenuous? If we had a ooc like Marquette that year we would've still made it, wins over top 5 L'ville, Syracuse, G'town and top 20 Marquette cover a lot of ooc stink. How convenient you want to use Nova's worse ooc schedule of the last few years to help you prop up another one of your fuzzy math sky is falling threads. It must pain you to do so, especially after dogging our ooc for so long. If Marquette goes 10-2 ooc and 9-9 in conference with wins over Nova, X, Prov., and Butler they are most likely in, especially if a couple of those are on the road. You use what ever metric or data that fits your agenda and quickly drop it, move it, or jump to the other side of the fence whenever it suits you.

Sorry but if they are 9-9 with those wins, they would have had 5 losses to Georgetown, Creighton ,Seton Hall, DePaul, and St John's. Sorry- but if you schedule 335 OOC SOS, you have to be flawless. Marquette would hardly be that. And sorry but a 90 RPI just does not get in the tourney. Never has. I want to say the worst RPI ever to get in was 70.

Also, sorry but this years 4 wins you're saying won't all be top 20 wins. Providence and Butler almost certainly won't be top 20. Big East 2012-13 was the #2 conference in the country. 4 top 12 teams (out of 15 if you remember). This year, BE is #3 in KP- barely ahead of the Big Ten for #4.

Sorry, but there is no excuse for Marquette's OOC schedule. And the committee does like to send message that teams that schedule like that will not be rewarded. You schedule like a wimp, you aren't going to be rewarded.

also with Nova that year a few things...
1- Nova was still only the 9th team in the tourney- only 8 teams got in below them at large. So hardly a resounding entry.
2- Nova did finish 10-8 in conference.
3- Nova did have the 167 SOS OOC.

If 2 was 9-9 or 3 was 335, things would have gotten extremely dicey for Nova. It's not like there were 15 teams below them.

So to summarize for Marquette vs Nova 2013-
1- the top teams in the conference aren't as strong- yes top 2 are- but 3 and 4 no where close to what '13 BE had.
2- Marquette absolutely must finish 10-8 to have any shot.
3- if Marquette is left out, they have absolutely no one to compain to at all whatsoever.
4- Marquette MUST improve their OOC SOS next season.
5- Conferences don't earn bids. Teams do.

Stop bitching about DePaul and talk more about the 6 teams that could make the NCAA Tournament....and having some success in the tourney....and not just being selected on Selection Sunday.

Much better topic to discuss.

I'm sorry what are we supposed to do? Give DePaul a participation trophy? DePaul hired a wash up coach who ditched them. They are like the girl who gets dumped and the takes the guy back just because he couldn't get anyone better. This thread, was about NCAA tourney teams, as such it had nothing to do about DePaul until you brought it up. Every confernce needs a cellar dweller. In the A-10 it was Fordham for the Big East it's DePaul. That doesn't appear to be changing anytime soon. Just don't get upset when people call out DePaul for what they are. If that offends you, maybe you should follow a youth team in a league that doesn't keep score.

As long as DePaul comes out of non-conference play with a good record versus D1 opponents I'm perfectly happy. I don't even care about their strength of schedule.

In my view, each school should schedule the maximum non-conference SOS they can while also feeling almost certain they'll win 70-80% of their games.

This is the mathematical way to RPI Nirvana.

PKI,

Yes, DePaul currently is the Big East cellar team program. But DePaul is not going to kill everyone's chance to make the NCAA Tournament. That is why I have recommended to stop worrying about DePaul's program and leave that up to us long-time DePaul fans.

St. John's gets killed by a terrible team at home and no one is ripping them because they have the great new coach, Chris Mullin.

Leitao had success his first time around at DePaul. Give him and Chris Mullin time to build these programs. DePaul has TREMENDOUS pressure to success with the new great facility on its way.....or there will be some future financial issues.

There is nothing to talk about with regards to DePaul until something positive starts happening. DePaul will NOT be good for the rest of the season most likely. They have average players....period. And don't pretend like you know DePaul.....I know DePaul, not you!

My point is lets see if the VERY good Big East teams can make some noise in the NCAA Tournament. Nova and Xavier along with Butler should go far.

Demon,

I think you missed the point. No one in this thread said anything about DePaul until you brought it up. If we can't comment on the other teams in conference, what is the point of having a conference message board. DePaul fans need to get tougher skins. People will always call out the organizations that are floundering.

You stated I shouldn't pretend like I know DePaul, I never implied that I did. Obviously you know DePaul better than I do. I only know what I've seen on the court for the past decade, and it hasn't been pretty. As a Cincinnati Bengal ticket holder for 20+ years, I do know inept leadership. The Bengals have turned it around recently, but for a long time they were one of the worst ran organizations in all of sports. I see some similarities between DePaul basketball, and the Cincinnati Bengals of the 90s, and 00s.

While I am hopeful about the chances of every other team in the league to improve and contribute to the success of the league, I am not about DePaul. St. John's is probably the next worst team in the league, but the cupboard was empty, and they made a Coaching move that is inspiring. Will Mullin work out? We won't know until a couple of years. Right now its looking good. As a fan of the Big East I am optimistic that he will be successful. As a Xavier fan, I am afraid that St. John's might fall behind a Chris Mullin coach teams. Leitao causes me no such concerns. It seems like very few people were inspired by the Leiato hiring. Probably less than half of the 2k or so fans that show up for DePaul games were inspired either. I'm pretty sure many people said it was another case of DePaul being DePaul. My analogy about the Girl Taking the guy that dumped her back still make sense to me. Leitao couched at DePaul for three years and made the NIT twice (went 1-2), and the NCAA once (went 1-1). After those three seasons he bolted town. That type of record might sound good after decades of losing (Combined in the Great Midwest and Conference USA, DePaul had 3 years of winning conference records, 3 years of 500 conference play, and 7 years of losing records in conference) That doesn't sound overly impressive. It seems mediocre, and maybe that is what DePaul is going for. Because Leitao was not a reach for the stars hire, and I would be shocked if he gets a winning record in the big east during the next five years.

Instead of continuing to document why DePaul is bad, I would just like to reiterate my point of my first post. When you are losing don't get mad about people saying you are bad. Its not pleasant to here, but getting upset doesn't work. Trust me I heard my team called the Cincinnati "Bungles" on national television many times. I wasn't upset at the announcer, I was upset with Mike Brown. Maybe you shouldn't be concerns with my comments, or NovaBall's comments. Maybe you should worry about DePaul and their inept AD.

RPI Forecast - through games of Dec. 20, 2015

Projected RPI Ranking – Team • Projected W-L Record vs. RPI Top 50 Teams

1 – Xavier • 7-3
9 – Villanova • 4-5
14 – Butler • 5-4

40 – Providence • 3-6
63 – Seton Hall • 2-7
84 – Creighton • 2-8
95 – Georgetown • 2-9
120 – Marquette • 2-7
174 – DePaul • 1-10
209 – St. John’s • 0-10

RPI Forecast – Big East Conference – through games of Dec. 20, 2015

Team • Projected W-L Record (Projected Conf. W-L Record)

Xavier • 26-4 (14-4)
Villanova • 25-6 (14-4)
Butler • 24-6 (13-5)

Providence • 20-11 (9-9)
Seton Hall • 19-11 (9-9)
Creighton • 18-13 (9-9)
Georgetown • 15-16 (8-10)
Marquette • 19-12 (8-10)
DePaul • 9-21 (4-14)
St. John’s • 9-20 (3-15)

RPI Forecast currently projects that only three Big East teams will have winning conference W-L records and that Providence is projected to have a record of 3-6 vs. RPI Top 50 teams, which appears to put the Friars on the bubble at present.

If RPI Forecast is correct (which is improbable with about 22 regular-season games remaining for most teams), three Big East teams are ‘locks’ for the NCAA Tournament with Providence having a bit more work to do to make the field – starting tonight at RPI # 179 Massachusetts.
