But once again, Georgetown at some point needs to be an asset to the league: at some point your program just is what your results say it is.

No it doesn't, but the Big East needs two of their top tier "brand" teams to be good/great each year to keep perception up. I'd consider top tier: Villanova, SJU, Georgetown, Marquette (maybe X). Every year some of those teams will be down, but that's why the league needs at least two to be good.
The B1G can take the Illini and Wisky being bad or average, same with the PAC12 and ASU and the ACC with the Wolfpack. Georgetown is a pillar of this league, which like it or not is still going to have to earn the right (as far as reputation) to be considered Top 5 conference since it's separation. The good thing is it's only the first game, plenty of season left. I don't think this loss makes the league mid major like, but with every hit the league takes it hurts its perception - especially without having ESPN to back it.
