So let's talk about facts since you brought it up.
Nova's record in the past 2 years is 62-8 (89% winning pct.). Their record in conference is 32-4 (also 89% winning pct.) with two regular season championships and a BET championship. I believe they were picked to finish in 4th in that first year. There are 6 conf teams that have not yet beaten Nova since the new conference was formed. 6 out of 9, including SJU. They have been ranked in the Top 5 both of the last two years, and no other BE teams have earned more tourney credits than Nova (directly putting $ in SJU's pockets--you're welcome.) So run by us all again how Nova should be feeling that they are the underachievers in the conference?
Now SJU on the other hand is probably the poster child for long term underachievement. In year one of the conference you had a future NBA player in Sampson, perhaps the best 2 guard in the league in Harrison, the best rim protector in the country in Obekpa, one of the most all-around, do-everything, gifted athletes on the wing in Pointer and one of the top 3-4 PG's coming out of HS in Jordan. Result? 6 games behind Nova in the conf standings, a first round BET loss on your home court when a win would have gotten you in the tourney, another first round exit in the NIT, on your home court, as a 1 seed. Year 2? Mediocre league record again--6 games behind Nova in the standings yet again, in a season that included a 37 point loss to the team that you feel underachieved. They squeak into the tourney only to lose by double digits in a toss up 8/9 game.
And we're the underachievers? Exhibit A of the delusion of SJU Nation...

No, we were never supposed to do anything special. Those guys you listed were literally all we had. We had no bench. You guys on the other hand getting #1 seeds and not getting out of the first week is underachieving. Face it, you guys choke. That's an actual fact.
You better enjoy being on top while you can, because everyone is starting to catch up. Not just my Johnnies but Marquette is reloading, X and Butler are seeing the benefits of big east recruiting and Gtown is always dangerous. Hell if Cooley could ever get a full roster at Providence (remember them? Another team you choked against) they could win the reg season.
Your Philly insecurity is out there for all to see. No one likes a sore winner.

However- that doesn't mean that Nova didn't underachieve in the tourney. To have a 2 and 1 seed- and not advance out of the 1st weekend- there's no way to dismiss that isn't underachieving themselves.
Let's say this- to casual fans- Nova has underachieved WAY more than St John's(or frankly any other Big East school) the last 2 years. Yes the 62-8 record looks wonderful. But College Basketball is primarily what have you done in March, and there's no way to say that Nova hasn't underachieved in March. Nova has to mean more in March than just the piccolo girl.

THIS IS F'ING PRICELESS!!!!
1). "We were never supposed to do anything special."
2013-14 Pre-season coaches poll (1st place votes in parenthesis):
Men's Big East Preseason Poll
Marquette (5) - 74
Georgetown (2) - 70
Creighton (1) - 61
Villanova - 58
St. John's (2) - 56
Providence - 41
Xavier - 38
Seton Hall - 20
Butler - 19
DePaul - 13
You had the same expectations as Nova. Actually two coaches thought you guys would win the league.
Your comment though captures perfectly the fans' expectations of your Johnnies. What a loser mentality. You had a floor full of talented players and still your low expectations were met. Miss the tourney and lose in the first round of the NIT. Keep aiming for the stars Redmen. I keep forgetting that you guys are happy if you just make the tourney. Most of the other programs in this conference are expected to carry the load, they don't wait for their conference mates to do all of the work. Here's the thing champ... For this conference to be successful EVERY program needs to carry it's own weight. We don't need teams who wait for others to do the job for them. It can't always just be the same teams. We know who they are: Nova, G'town, Marq., X, Butler, Prov., CU. SJU HAS NOT WON A TOURNMENT GAME SINCE 2000. 15 seasons have passed since your last win. Wow. Talk about irrelevance. In that span Nova has won 14 tourney games, including a run to the FF. So you really have the audacity to come on here and question Nova's tournament resume'.
2). You better enjoy being on top while you can, because everyone is starting to catch up. God I hope so. We need multiple teams in the Top 25, not just one. And we need multiple teams getting Top 4 seeds, not just one. But we've been "waiting for SJU to catch up" for 15 years and it hasn't happened. What makes you think it'll happen any time soon?
3). Hell if Cooley could ever get a full roster at Providence (remember them? Another team you choked against) they could win the reg season.
Um...Cooley and Providence are 0 for their last 5 against us? When did we "choke" to them, again?
It seems clear to me NJRedman, aka Lavinwood, or whomever you care to be called, that you embody your team well. A lot of talk and hype but absolutely no action. I hope you enjoy another year of low expectations. What do you think the over/under for games below Nova that you guys finish this year? I'm thinking 8-10 minimum. Do you want to know what's sad? Rooting for a team that has no hope to do anything of note anytime soon.

Oh, look aac homer stever checking in on the subject. To narrow minded fans, maybe Nova has, in your words, "WAY" underachieved more than St. John's, but then again they're narrow minded. Exactly who is your make believe BE team again?, and what have they achieved the last 2 years?

Nova fans will be the first to tell you that we expect better results in the tourney. We consider ourselves an elite program; we strive for SW16's and E8's and FF when the season starts. We had expectations for a FF run; it didn't turn out as we had hoped. That's what happens in the tourney sometimes. Fans of X, G'town, Marq, Butler I imagine also understand because we've all been there before. We understand that it is not always easy. Sometimes you run into a team that is peaking at the right time (UCONN did actually end up winning the NC BTW), and sometimes you lay an egg (see Duke vs. Mercer, Lehigh, etc., or SJU vs. SD St.) or a team that is a bad matchup (everyone forgets that last year NC State also beat: Duke, UNC & L'ville and lost in the last possession to both VA and ND).
But for a fan of another program (NJRedman) or of another conference altogether (Stever) to come on here and try to tarnish the one program that has held up it's end of the bargain for the first two years of this conference--while your own team has contributed almost nothing--we Nova fans are going to defend ourselves, our program and our coach.
Son, we play a game that has tremendous competition, and that competition has to be faced with programs that win. Who's gonna do it? You, St. Johns? We have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for 3rd round exits, and you curse the Wildcats. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what we know -- that Nova's losing early in the tourney, while tragic, still brought the conference exposure; and while losing to the ACC and AAC, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, still brought exposure to the BE.
You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at Johnnies parties, you want us on that court -- you need us on that court.
We use words like "Big East Champions" "RPI," "Protected Seed." We use these words as the backbone of a season spent defending something. You use them as a punch line, while waiting for your NIT invite.
We have neither the time nor the inclination to explain ourselves to a fan who rises and sleeps under the exposure and revenue that we provide and then questions the manner in which we provide it.
We'd rather have you just say thank you, and be on your way... otherwise pick up a #1 or #2 seed on your own, and man the post. Either way, we don't give a DAMN what you think you're entitled to! "
