Don't know much about Villanova football but hiring an AD who has a big time football background sounds like a mistake to me....

while I disagreed about how far NovaBall was taking this, I have to say this hire is curious. I thought they would keep football pretty much status quo. But this move seems to say they are wanting to emphasize more football.

I think the allure of football money is so strong they can't resist. I mean, what makes Villanova different than the other private schools P5 schools?

Georgetown and Villanova, I believe, should always keep the football option on the table. Who knows what can happen?

They lack anywhere on-campus that could be used for a stadium. It is a very hard sell for a school to not own their own stadium and have it on-campus. It was part of the reason that Nova didn't move up when invited to by the BE. They would likely be behind UConn and Cinncy for ACC expansion (more established football, new markets, more students). As far as I know they aren't AAU so they wouldn't be attractive to the B1G (plus duplicating the Penn State market). SEC/B12/Pac12 all have geographic issues and would be able to raid the ACC if they wanted someone in the East. I don't see the point in moving up Nova's football just to compete in the AAC.

That's not to say that I don't think Nova's football program is beneficial. I would love for Marquette to have a similar program but that ship seems to have sailed long ago. It doesn't seem to have inhibited their basketball program and they have one of the better FCS level football programs with solid facilities. Great source of school pride.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

There is ZERO school pride in Villanova football. No students care about. No alumni care about it. Can't even draw two thousand fans to a home playoff game.

Anyway, now the football tough guys are saying this is being done to position themselves for the ACC. I think that's nonsense as I prefer the Big East. Money for hoops is just as good, I like the fox affiliation much more than ESPN, I like the similar style schools, etc... But apparently nova has some indication that the private schools in the ACC support them over say uconn or cincy which would continue to water down the institutional prestige of the conference.

I think this sucks.

Judging by the individual, his background and his strengths, I would say that Villanova is looking at (long-term) getting football into the FBS level and into a P5 conference. They don't make this kind of hire without that goal in mind.

Personally i see that this guy was in charge of capital projects at USC so I think the hire has to do more with getting the funding needed for a new arena rather than upgrading football but i could be wrong.
