Florida AD unclear on candidates, timeline for Billy Donovan successor - CBS Sports - Tuesday May 5, 2015

Florida AD Jeremy Foley is known to be an outside-the-box conductor of coaching searches and hires. We gave you a list of realistic candidates for Florida to home in on going forward. In recent days, names like Providence's Ed Cooley and Valpo's Bryce Drew have also been thrown about.

Foley resisted putting a timetable on when his men's basketball hire would be made.

"The key would be to have something in place I would think sometime in June," Foley said."Who knows when it will happen, but again, there's some time here."

The national search is officially on, though, and per Foley, it began late Monday. Anything prior? Speculation and misinformation, he said.

"A lot of rumors, I see scrolls across the bottom of ESPN ... I don't know where that stuff comes from," he said. "I haven't talked to one coach. I [haven't] had time to do that."

Two things:

Xavier - Chris Mack - just hired Luke Murray (Bill Murray's son) away from Rhode Island as one of his new assistant coaches. I don't believe Chris would make such a move if he were preparing to move on.

Secondly, Michael White is now rumored to be the frontrunner:

Hope this is true, although if I was a Florida fan, I'd be pretty underwhelmed by this pick.

Obviously, I like that Chris just added to his staff AT XAVIER.

I don't care who Florida picks as its next coach, so long as it isn't Chris Mack.

Florida Fan #1: Hey, you hear we just hired a new basketball coach?

Florida Fan #2: What happened to the old one?

Florida Fan #1: Dunno.

Florida Fan #2: Huh. Anyway, you hear that Gentry might be the third-string quarterback going into summer optional workouts?

Florida Fan #1: Don't get me started on Gentry. I was hoping Johnson would get a shot.

Sadly, that's the case for every SEC school except Kentucky.

Why sadly? I don't want schools who can throw around huge dollars to get serious about basketball. Let them keep throwing tens of millions into new dining halls for football players. Nothing to see over here in hoops land.

I would rather schools in the SEC use the logic that they need to throw huge sums of money at their basketball coaches and then dust off their hands like a job well done than actually take the time and effort to put together coaching staffs who fit the school's culture and have serious ambition for the program.

Florida should be looking for a good X's & O's coach, who understands the south, has enough energy to get fans to remember and care when it is actually basketball season, and to be able to close on recruits. At Florida you don't necessarily need a workaholic that finds diamonds in the rough. Everyone already knows who Florida is, you already have an open door for most recruits. You need to be able to make them feel like more of a priority to you than your competition and be able to close the deal when it is decision time. Having a good media personality is important so you can make sure your team is getting plenty of coverage when they are good and isn't just an after thought to football, while also allowing them to protect you and hide behind football if a bad season does occur.

Great hire for Florida and obviously good for the Big East that nobody got poached.
