What does X pay Mack? Too lazy to look it up. I'm a little surprised that they can't make that more of a destination job and hold on to at least one of these coaches a little longer. They've done really well hiring so far, but all it takes is one bad hire to derail things for a decade. But the other institutional factors seem to be in place (great on-campus facility, clear administrative and fan support, good league, TV exposure), so all I can come up with is a less than market rate salary structure. Villanova and G'town seem able to keep coaches around (admittedly, G'town has a special relationship with GTIII), would be nice to see schools like Marquette, Xavier, Butler and Creighton move into that echelon as well.

Per Xavier's 2012 Form 990 (tax return for nonprofits), Mack made $1,063,527. The period end date was June 30, 2013. So from 7/1/2012 - 6/30/2013, he made nearly $1.1 million.

Since that was almost 2 years ago, he almost assuredly makes more than that now. I believe he has signed one, if not two, extension(s) in the past 2 offseasons, so I would be shocked if he made less than $1.3 million. I also doubt the above number includes the other forms of compensation he receives, but wanted to at least post a credible source to what his salary was two years ago, as reported to the IRS.

Here is a link to the 2012 return, which is where I pulled that $1,063,527 compensation number from (see page 14 of the PDF):

When we lost Crean, we were in CUSA. Our basketball budget has nearly tripled since then. We also lost him to an all-time program in Indiana. We did not attempt to keep Buzz, who took a pay cut when he left, because he was not running a clean program despite huge concessions made by the administration. I would like to see what happens in the long run with Wojo, as the factors are all in place for him to stay a long time. If he leaves for Duke after performing well, who could blame him? If he sticks around, we learn that we are now a destination program. If he leaves for a lesser P5 program, then we are a stepping stone.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Also, for you UD fans that like to frequent the board, Archie Miller made $627,832 from 7/1/2012 - 6/30/2013. This is per the 990 filed by the University of Dayton to the IRS. See Page 15 the following link:

http://207.153.189.83/EINS/310536715/31 ... 67ecba.PDF

I am 99.99% certain that he makes a lot more than that now. I just wanted to post the salary of the other top candidate for the FL coaching position, in the same time frame as the salary I reported for Chris Mack.

The fiscal year ending 6/30/2013 (2012 990) was the latest tax return that was available to view on the website. Otherwise I would have shown the updated compensation numbers from the 2013 return.

You can search (and view) most nonprofit 990's on this website:

Marquette certainly pays enough to be a destination job for the right guy. Have to think Wojo would leave for the right opportunity, but he was a good hire.

Xavier would have to almost double their coaching salary to play with the top dogs in the BE, much less the top schools in the P5. Jay Wright is at 2.7, JT3 is comparable. That's a big jump. But an investment worth making to ensure long term success.

From the Florida beat writer for the last 12 years.

"@gatorhoops: Silly season is in earnest. Told report that #Gators and Xavier's Chris Mack are in "deep discussions" isn't accurate."

Even if Mack were to leave, I think we will be fine. I can't imagine the young core of the team leaving, seeing as they were primarily recruited by assistant coach Travis Steele who would likely move up and take the HC job. I personally think Mack is overrated at the moment. Not that he is a bad coach, but he is still improving and not what I would consider a finished product. He has some great games where he looks like a genius (3 victories over Georgetown come to mind) but then some games he makes no adjustments (Wooden Legacy, Auburn. etc.) That being said, he has improved every year he has been at X and likely will only improve more. So I am optimistic either way.
