2015 Gavitt Tip-Off Games

The home for Big East hoops

True- however it also means our home games are double edged swords as well- wins don't help much, and losses wouldn't be good.

And really FS1 doesn't get much help from this year at all...
Rutgers @ St John's
Illinois @ Providence
Nebraska @ Villanova
Iowa @ Marquette

If they're doubleheaders, I'm assuming the Illinois/Providence and Iowa/Marquette games are the 9pm starts. That's decent but nothing earth shattering.

compare to ESPN:
Georgetown @ Maryland
Xavier @ Michigan
Creighton @ Indiana
DePaul @ Penn St

I'm guessing they'll have a dh of Georgetown/Maryland, Xavier/Michigan. That's a real good both games in at least top 25 range, if not better.

The Creighton/Indiana and DePaul/Penn St games likely on the Big Ten Network....

How in the hell am I moving the goalposts?

We get their toughest teams on the road. They get our toughest team on the road in Nova, and then Providence and Marquette should be good teams. They get a chance with middle level teams in Illinois, Nebraska, and Iowa to get pretty big wins. It's just as double edged for us as it is the Big Ten. Hell, probably could make the argument that it's more of a double edged sword for us compared to the Big Ten. If Maryland/Michigan/Indiana lose- won't be viewed as that bad of a loss. But if Villanova, Providence, or Marquette lose- at least 1 of those would be viewed as a bad loss- and maybe up to all 3 of them. And, if the favorites win, it's going to do more for the Big Ten than the Big East- not even close.

If you are talking about TV- it's pretty damn obvious that the top games are going to be on ESPN. Georgetown/Maryland and Xavier/Michigan blow the doors off of anything that FS1 gets. Any moron can see that. Hell, Creighton/Indiana to me is better than Illinois/Providence or Iowa/Marquette.

That's why I laughed a year ago when everyone on here thought this was such a home run for us. And it's been almost exactly like I thought it would be. It's good for us- it's a solid single- maybe a double. But home run? No way.

Rutgers at St John's <--- bunny.
Illinois at Providence <--- in Dunn returns, I like PC.
Nebraska at Villanova <--- bunny.
Iowa at Marquette <--- if Ellenson, etc, had a few more games under their belt, they'd be solid favorites.

Georgetown at Maryland <--- toss up.
Xavier at Michigan <--- Xavier is going to be good next year. MU had a tough 2015 season.
Creighton at Indiana <--- many have overlooked how good Creighton played late last year.
DePaul at Penn State <--- like with Marquette, if Leitao had a few games under his belt, I think DePaul could win this easily.

I think in the end the Big East will go 4-4, 5-3 or 3-5.
There is actually a not-too-crazy chance for us to go 8-0.

We talk about "perception" a lot. A great Big East showing in the Gavitts would go a long way.

Michigan had a tough 2015 season, but with their roster they have coming back- been said they may be a preseason top 10 team. Xavier will be adjusting to life with out Stainbrook.

Matchups could have been better, could have been worse. Creighton could have drawn Nebr or Northwestern.
Marquette should be a solid favorite, Iowa sustained some heavy losses in Aaron White and Gabe Oleseni. Good core returning though.

ESPN's Stovall picks the Hawkeyes for spot below the 2015 B1G leaders (3rd -5th?)
What it means for next season: This has the makings of another solid Hawkeyes team. They will get scoring from Jok and Uthoff
(who could move into White’s role) while Woodbury, Gesell and Clemmons will have to step up into larger roles.

Creighton v Indiana - IMO a good matchup btwn 2 evenly matched teams. Should be a good, close game. Comes down to CU making FTs late for the W.
Indiana has not seen the Jays since the 70's. Creighton teams are great starters most seasons, getting out of the gate strongly and tend to play up to the competition.
Jays win by 4-5.

A source confirmed to ESPN that the Hoyas and Terrapins are the only matchup that is guaranteed to be a home-and-home in the series, with the first game at Maryland on a day to be determined between Nov. 17 and Nov. 20. The return game in the fall of 2016 will be at Georgetown's home at the Verizon Center.

So
Georgetown @ Maryland
Xavier @ Michigan
Creighton @ Indiana

Rutgers @ St John's
Illinois @ Providence
Nebraska @ Villanova
Penn St @ DePaul
Iowa @ Marquette

1 thing that is really interesting is Big East gets 5 home games, Big Ten only 3. I wonder if one of the Big East home games was agreed to shift to either the Big Ten Network or ESPN.

Or it might be possible that Fox got 5 games in exchange for ESPN arguably getting the two best matchups on paper. Plus, Fox gets a guaranteed return game between Georgetown and Maryland next year. Not a bad trade if that was the deal.

A return game as part of the Gavitt games?

For those two schools to agree on the game, yes.

I think I saw that the Maryland/Georgetown game in '16/17 will be part of the Gavitt series as well.
