Chris Mullin new head coach of St. John's!

I've hearing the talk all week on Sirius and CBSSN, if St. John's is even a good job. I hear people talk about the dorms not the same as back in the glory days. What does that mean? What's this dorm issue?

There were no dorms back in the glory days, which basically allowed them to pay players like Mullin with stipends while they lived at home.

So, I'm hearing the problem is players don't want to live in the dorms?

I think what they are inferring is that back in the day, they got to Pay a player like Mullin a stipend, while other schools couldn't because they had dorms. Pretty big advantage- because for instance Mullin wouldn't have to pay for anything to live at home- and it'd be just free money for him.

You people are really funny in your hating. Kids don't know who Chris Mullin is? What do teenagers have trouble working the internet? They can't figure out Google?

I'm not "hating", not congratulating either, but definitely not "hating".

I hope I am wrong but I can't see Mullin doing well and I don't see them outbidding every other school for their wishlist of assistants. I am not rooting against the guy but I feel there is so much that has to happen for Mullin just to have above average success. For him to be truly successful so much more has to fall in place and I don't like his chances.

Everyone wants to compare this to Hoiberg but we can also compare this to Clyde Drexler at Houston. Was he a success resurrecting a program who's glory days were during the mid-eighties? There is that old adage about great players being bad coaches and it makes sense. While Mullin was being successful in the NBA, some slow, short, untalented point guard became a post-graduate assistant and has acquired the skills and knowledge needed to become a successful coach. Maybe Hurley wasn't coming but I'd rather have Cluess or Masiello.

Your last sentence speaks volumes, NJ Redman. For kids with NBA aspirations, hooking up with a former NBA executive has to be an enormous positive.

How has that worked out for Eddie Jordan at Rutgers? I would expect every big time program has someone on-staff with a connection to the NBA. I don't think the fact that Mullin had an office at Sleep Train Arena is helping to sign four-stars.

You think Eddie Jordan is one ht same level as Mullin? Drexler wasn't a front office NBA exec for a decade. Drexler played as long as he did because of his athletic ability, Mullin wasn't fast and couldn't jump high. He played as long as he did because he was smarter than most in the league when it came to BBall.

They don't have to outbid everyone for these assistants. Most of these guys are from NYC and are actually really good friends with Chris. Ed Pinkney grew up with Chris and played ball with him as kids and are still really close friends today. I know I would take a few less bucks to work with my best friend. Same goes with Slice. Been good friends with Chris since they were teenagers.

When it comes to the assistant coaches Chris has connections (better than Eddie Jordan) with every NBA team. If you want to move up the coaching ranks into the NBA it's not a bad idea to go coach for that guy. Lots of people in the association respect Mullins opinion.

Oh and I say haters because the word I really wanted to use wouldn't be allowed on here.

Here is a parallel situation. Calbert Cheaney is a Hoosier Legend. He starred in HS at Evansville, went to IU, still holds the Big Ten scoring record, won all 12 national college player of the year awards in 1993, and had a solid NBA 11 year career. He is now the head recruiter at St. Louis University. He is well known in the Midwest particularly in Indiana, and parents, coaches, etc. respond to him. If he goes to NYC, how many HS recruits and even HS coaches would recognize him? Same situation with the new SJU coach. How is it the same situation? Mullin is a hall of famer, NBA All star and was selected to be on the greatest Basketball team ever assembled. Cheaney isn't even close to the same as Mullin. Mullin's name definitely carries more weight in the basketball world. Guy was a superstar. Hell he was in NBA Jam!!!

Mullin made his fame as a college player in NYC. But that was 4 years. He made his fame as an NBA player in San Francisco, playing there for about 3 times as long as he did in NY. Then he finished his NBA career with several years in Indianapolis.

How is his fame restricted to NY? He is known coast to coast.

Wonder all you want because I am wondering how any St. John's fan isn't at least questioning if the school is more worried about donations or winning games.
