Dave Leitao will return as DePaul's next coach, according to sources. Bryce Drew and Bobby Hurley turned it down.

He's a local Chicago sports reporter who got the scoop.

DePaul is a place where careers often go to die, I can understand why they would be leary to take that job and leave there mid-major jobs where they arguably have a better shot to get to the dance every year.

Can we please get back to SJU hiring Mullin? I think this is much bigger (and more positive) news than DePaul hiring another crappy coach to keep them bad.

You're probably kidding about Jayson Williams . Meta World Peace would be a great addition. I saw him on Fox News talking to Bill O'Reilly. He was a maniac in the NBA but seems like a nice guy off the court.

Is that documented somewhere? Find it hard to believe that both guys came to Chicago to interview and both said no thanks....

I don't want to speculate or put rumors out as fact, but as a noted hypocrite I will. There has been speculation that the DePaul administration was looking to dictate at least one of the assistant coaches. In this scenario, Hurley and Drew were both turned off by the administration wanting to meddle even before hiring.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Maybe he'll hire Bill Wennington and Mark Jackson ? I remember seeing Mullin in the hallways at SJU. He was so young back then.

I can't see this ending well for St. John's.

What makes anybody think that an 18 year old recruit would care about Chris Mullin? Maybe a Wally World-type recruit would care but the black kid from Lincoln will not, the kid from suburban St. Joe's Metuchen will not, every kid that flocks to the Patrick School, Roselle Catholic, St. Benedict's, and St Anthony's isn't going to care.

So we are left with an inexperienced coach and recruiter that really doesn't have the juice with these young kids that the school thinks he does have. This is such a clutcher-f*@k of a hiring that a .500 team will be a morale victory.

You don't have a clue to wtf you're talking about. Mullin and Slice are best friends, and from what I hear him coming here is a real possibility. I seen that we already have a top recruiter sewn up. The staff is very much a key.
Hearing that there are some real exciting names that we are talking to.

Now to the 16, 17, and 18 yr old kids, true they might not know who Mullin is, but you be damn sure that their parents know who he is very well.

I don't know what I'm talking about but you think Calipari and Kentucky are going to get outbid for Slice? You better hope Calipari is stupid enough to try out the NBA again. If they can get Slice, St. John's should round out the staff with Mike Hopkins.

Who are these exciting names? If you go by the school's bad hire at head coach, I expect a few Roshown McLeods on the staff to bring the ineptitude full circle. Maybe Milt Wagner is available!!!! Sh*t, Lenny Cooke isn't doing anything. Maybe he can learn on the job just like Mullin.

Right, i don't agree with the line of thought that says "17 year olds don't know who the guy is"... like you said, parents, uncles, high school coaches, neighbors, really anyone over the age of 30 in NYC knows who Chris Mullin is. And these family members and friends have a huge influence on recruits. Sure, maybe people in Possum Hollow Texas don't at this point, but i don't think that's important right now. Plus he'll help sell tickets.

Also, Mullin and lack of coaching experience... i mean, how difficult is it to be an improvement over Lavin... to be worse, Mullin during timeouts would have sit silently on a folding chair with a towel over his head.
