Andy Katz: DePaul to Name Dave Leitao Head Coach

So if it was DePaul's goal to get a coach that experienced success at the school, why choose Leitao over Joey Meyer?

10 years younger I think. Also Meyer really didn't do much last 8 years he was at DePaul.

I like Leitao a lot as a guy, and I know he did a nice job in his three-year stint with the school from 2002 to 2005, but Leitao is in his mid-50's now. I would have preferred a younger, hungrier head coach -- a la Bobby Hurley.

Also... Leitao actually recruited pretty well during his first go around. Wilson Chandler committed to Leitao before he left. Same with Sammy Mejia. And he got a signed NLI from Dorrel Wright out of Prep School before Wright entered the NBA Draft... which NO ONE thought was a possibility at the time. And I know Drake Diener thinks very highly of him... again, still trying to talk myself into this.

The only sadder event at the DePaul was the closing of Demon Dogs at the Fullerton L stop.
WTF were they thinking with this hire? Reminds me of the Raiders recycling Art Shell. Blown opportunity to inject excitment in this program.

I think this makes more sense than the Raiders with Art Shell because the Raiders in between the appearances had 3 playoff trips along with a Super Bowl appearance. DePaul has had 1 winning season since he left.

I know nothing about Leitao. At a minimum, he has to be better than Purnell. I agree a young hungry coach like Bobby Hurley would have really excited the program. Looking forward to finding out more about the guy.

Definitely has a bad smell about it. Why not even take a chance on one of the Hurley or anyone really?
