It would also be bad to do it now because they will have a late start in the interview process with all the other openings available already.

Do you really think Lavin would agree to that though? I don't. Also if it got out that it was just 1 guaranteed year and the rest isn't guaranteed, he'd still be viewed as a lame duck.

Why wouldnt he? an extra couple million for another year and also try to redeem himself. He would also be criticized for leaving the program in worst shape than what he started with. It has also been reported that he is shopping around looking for an analyst job, this is a small community where your reputation is very important.

Keep in mind that Oliver Purnell had a 7 year contract. It was probably 5 years guaranteed and 2 dependent. He decided to resign instead of getting fired.

It would be safe to say that next year will be Lavins last year unless he surprises everyone with a Final Four run.

I just think he would want more guaranteed money quite frankly...

Also got to remember how bad St John's was when he took over. 17-16,16-18,11-19,16-15,12-15 were the 5 years before he took over. 29-57 in conference play. So no he leaves now, I don't think the program is in worse shape now than when he took over.

I think also folks remember how good of an analyst he is. He won't have any problems going back there. Got to remember his last year at UCLA he was only 10-19.

There is no question the program improved with Lavin. He took over a team that had done very little in the three years prior and had them finish the season ranked 18, tied for 3rd in the 16 team Big East, beat Duke, G'town, Pitt, UConn, and Notre Dame - all ranked. Two Big East rookies of the year. Two most improved players. Two NBA players. Three 20 win seasons. Two NCAA and two NIT bids. Definitely made SJU relevant in NYC. The problem is his #3 ranked class underachieved. Too many non qualifiers and too many suspensions. Does he deserve an extension? Probably, but there are obvious deficiencies he hasvto correct typing forward.
