First and foremost the new coach should have great ties with the AAU programs in the Chicago area. It's a lot easier to be a good coach with good players.

Will disagree with you; it is a nice to have, but the current team has six kids who played on Chicago AAU programs (Hamilton, Stimage, Garrett Jr, Henry, Simpson, Crockett) and RJ Currington is from the area, but played at Oak Hill and I think played with some of their AAU programs out there.

Find a coach who can get the most out of his players. Follow the Butler/Wisconsin/UVA model.

DePaul needs a new athletic director or else their pick for their new head coach could turn out like Wainwright and Purnell did. DePaul will be at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL for probably 3 more season before moving to the McCormick Place Events Center, which isn't scheduled to break ground until July 2015. Late 2017 or early 2018 is realistic for completion of the events center. I hope more than just the current athletic director is working on the new head coach selection. They really need an all-star caliber head coach and athletic director to reinvigorate DePaul's men's basketball program.

The more I think about it, the more I think they should just get the biggest name possible. The program can use every bit of hype possible. And how often do we really here about a big name hire totally failing?

I suspect it will be a younger coach, in the mold of Bryce Drew, Bobby Hurley, maybe Brian Wardle (no NCAA appearance hurts him)

Neither Hurley is going to DePaul.

There are reports that DePaul has reached out to former Oregon State Head Coach, Craig Robinson (Michelle Obama's brother), to gauge his interest. If true, it just shows how disassociated JLP and DePaul Athletics are from Men's Basketball. To go from Wainwright to Purnell to (possibly) Robinson would be yet another failure on the administration's fault to create interest and support for the program.

DePaul obviously won't be getting a top, proven, head coach, but they can definitely go young (whether that's a current head coach at mid-major level, or a high-level assistant). They don't need yet another mediocre, older, head coach who has already peaked.

Bryce Drew, Brian Wardle, Steve Masiello, or, my personal choice, John Gianni, would all be terrific hires.

I read that Craig Robinson met with UIC yesterday, and that Holy Cross is also interested in him.
I haven't read anything linking Robinson to DePaul.

I also read that DePaul is primarily focused on 3 guys:
- Howland.
- Bobby Hurley.
- Bryce Drew.

Also:
- Wardle.
- Muller from Illinois State.
- their alums of Tyrone Corbin, Aguirre and Rod Strickland.

Masiello and Giannini (La Salle) I had only seen via Big East Coast Bias, but nowhere else.

DePaul is a great job for the right person. The expectations are low, the pay is great and recruiting can be done in your backyard.

Why Gianinni? I always came away very unimpressed with the Doctor after watching his La Salle teams. He had the one decent tourney run but very meh other than that even with some very solid recruiting classes.

Anybody but Corbin. One of the worst coaches I've ever seen and has no experience recruiting. Hope Depaul stays far away.

Lots of good young options out there. One option that hasn't been mentioned yet in the thread is Kentucky assistant Kenny Payne, who is considered one of the best recruiters in the country and has experience recruiting in Chicago.
