I think Richmond is a better add than Dayton. An added market (Richmond) for recruiting, network footprint possibilities, etc.

12 Schools with like beliefs & academia, most in large or medium markets and good recruiting areas. 10 games against same division, 6 against other division = 16 games.

Divisions are more of a football thing. They are not necessary even under a 12 team format. But its looking more and more like it'll be 10 at least for a while

Haven't checked in for awhile. Did I miss something? Last I checked no one knew jack and it was total specualtion on everyone's part about pretty much everything to do with this.

Look at the comparison to the last 10 years of NBA players.

The only real weakness in recruiting is Omaha. Even though it doesn't show it, I believe I read somewhere that Indianapolis & St. Louis lead the nation on NBA draft picks per capita.




This is the market footprint. Not saying those schools I mentioned earlier necessarily dominate or carry the markets, but the footprint matters to cable carriers, etc.

I love the idea of two divisons based on geography. To make that happen Richmond is as good as a place to start as any other. Never really thought of compairing Richmond to Dayton. But looking at the population of their MSAs, Richmond is clearly a more attractive media market based on population.

I think you need to compare more than just population. The City of Dayton is passoniate about College Basketball and UD has a loyal following. As a Xavier fan I might also add that their fan base is dulisional, but that is a different subject. Nothing in Dayton really competes with college basketball for attention. There is Wright State University but they are god awful, and have very little following. A common phrase used to describe them is Right State Wrong College.

Admittedly I know little about Richmond. How passionate about basketball is the City of Richmond. Which program in town gets top billing, Richmond or VCU? Other than being a private school what advantage does Richmond have over VCU?

That's where I'm going with this. Media markets matter, and if Cincinnati/Dayton is considered one market (easy travel back and forth) than Xavier is the only realistic choice there. Also, if you look at the recruiting map, northern and eastern Virginia is better than Dayton/Cincinnati. Why add Dayton when any potential recruit that lives there can easily make it to Indy or Cincy for "hometown" games. With Richmond, you also get closer to a smaller "hotbed" of NBA/College talent in northern North Carolina.

Other than being a private school what advantage does Richmond have over VCU?

Not sure other than being private. I don't think the C7+ league wants an academic advantage given to a state school (VCU) in recruiting.

I actually like this arrangement. My thought is would Marquette object to being placed into a division with new schools thereby losing the rivalries / connections they've made with the old Big East schools?

ultimately, i think the question of 10 vs 12 will be answered by the television partners. Do numbers 11 and 12 add to the pot from a per team perspective? Reduce?

I think VCU beats out Richmond in basketball tradition, support and facilities. Richmond has the edge when it comes to academics and being a private institution.

This conference isn't going to start it's own network, so media markets aren't going to be that important. As for recruiting, not 100%, but I don't believe Xavier has had a kid from Virginia since Richmond joined the A10 back in 2001. Better options than Richmond.
