Need to get someone back in Atlantis. That tournament is great.

I like nova in the nit. Good for the NYC alumni base. I don't really care who else is in it, I will be happy if they can against whoever.

Looks like a pretty good selection across the board.

problem is those exempt tournaments are so huge that you can't afford to be in one with no good opponents.

My guess as to the Puerto Rico Tipoff bracket:

1 - Utah
8 - Missouri State

4 - Miami
5 - Minnesota

3 - Temple
6 - Texas Tech

2 - Butler
7 - Mississippi State
Butler Bulldogs
'62, '97, '98, '00, '01, '03, '07, '08, '09, '10, '11, '13, '15, '16, '17, '18
'33, '34, '47, '52, '53, '59, '61, 62, '97, '98, '00, '01, '02, '03, '07, '08, '09, '10, '11

Nah, win the pre-season NIT and that is all good. Sure, you would like to grab a nice out of conference scalp in the pre-season tourney, but villanova will have other opportunities. They usually schedule some random other games against big name opponents (the Illinois game at msg for example this yr)

And just because there are good teams in the pre-season tourney there is no guarantee you will pick up a win. So for nova, just going to NYC and winning the pre-season NIT will accomplish what they need from their pre-season tourney.

They don't actually seed these pre-season tournaments the way you guys are attempting, do they?

I thought they just tried to get some balance and some good tv match ups, but they don't actually take the time to rank the teams one through eight and then bracket them accordingly. Some of you are overthinking this.

I think it depends. I mean- Butler getting wins over UNC and Georgetown made things for them much easier. Providence getting the win over Notre Dame made things a lot easier for them. Even Nova over VCU is probably a factor in them being a 1 seed right now vs a 2. Look at their competition for the 1 seed.
Wisconsin- won battle 4 Atlantis with wins over Georgetown and Oklahoma
Gonzaga- won NIT with wins over Georgia and St John's
Duke- won Coaches vs Cancer with wins over Temple and Stanford
really only Virginia doesn't follow that script, they won Barclay's with wins over LaSalle and Rutgers.

So it can be done- but if you go that route, you have to get wins like Virginia did over Maryland, VCU, and Davidson OOC.

1 thing interesting now for Georgetown- I'm assuming they will want Duke in the title game, so Georgetown may be stuck playing Wisconsin in the SF while Duke gets VCU. Takes Wisconsin out of the mix for Georgetown playing them in the Gavett games as well. Kind of guessing we'd see Maryland possibly- or maybe someone like a Ohio St or Michigan St.

Ever since St. John's, Wagner, Fordham, NYU and Manhattan sold the NIT to the NCAA some 11 years ago it has steadily declined. This season, the four top seeds were Minnesota, Ole Miss, Gonzaga and the Johnnies. But they couldn't field enough teams after that and instead they put in Division II schools (The Johnnies played Franklin Pierce). For some reason, they have a hard time getting teams in.

I think part of the NIT's problem is up to this year it was you had to win 2 games to be guaranteed to go to MSG. I think the big schools want tourneys like 2K where you are guaranteed to go to the main site no matter what happens those 1st 2 games.

The problem was not getting the Big Schools, it was getting the smaller schools. The big schools were fine. Big East, Big Ten, SEC and the Zags.
