What in the world does Calhoun have to do with it?
The fact is that UConn was banned from the tournament for a year for a substandard APR, achieved prior to announcement of the new standard. Quite a trick by the NCAA.
In contrast to UConn, who was penalized for honestly and accurately reporting the academic failures of their student-athletes, Syracuse cheated to cover up the academic failures of their student-athletes and then received the same on-year ban as UConn for 8 years of reported academic fraud! Amazing. Their APR would certainly have been substandard for those 8 years had they not cheated. Using the same standard as was used against UConn, Syracuse should have been banned for 8 years.
But the ban against Syracuse was even weaker than that. Since their ban was announced in advance, UConn lost 2 players who transferred, 2 who left early for the NBA, and an unknown number of recruits. Since the Syracuse ban was announced in the middle of the season in which it takes effect, it has zero impact on Syracuse's recruiting or player retention. To make matters worse, they weren't going to the tournament this year anyway. So, no loss of a tournament spot either.
Yeah, Boeheim is a real class act. He presides over a program steeped in academic fraud, paying players, and violation of his school's drug policy. That's classy. This is the second time under his tenure that the Syracuse program was disciplined by the NCAA. Remember their use of street agents in recruiting? Yeah, classy. Nothing but class under Jim Boeheim.
BTW, I'm not a Jim Calhoun fan, but there is no comprise on between his act and Boeheim's.
