old RPI- all games counted the same- home/road/neutral.
new RPI- home games count .6 for a win, 1.4 for a loss. Road games opposite- 1.4 for a win, 0.6 for a loss. neutral site games still count 1.
So St John's this year-
12-4 at home. the new RPI record for that is 7.2-6.4.
3-5 at road. the new RPI record for that is 4.2-3.
1-0 neutral site.
So instead of being 17-9, St John's for the new RPI purposes is 12.4-9.4.
12.4-9.4 winning pct is .5688.
17-9 winning pct is .6538.
difference is .0850- or in full RPI .02126. Just that difference would take them from .5802 up to .6015- which is a HUGE difference.
Compare to Xavier. They are 16-10 so 1 game worse than St John's right now....
12-2 at home. New RPI- 7.2-3.2
3-6 at road. New RPI 4.2-3.6
1-2 neutral site.
So instead of being 16-10, Xavier for new RPI purposes is 12.4-8.8.
St John's may have to start scheduling more than 1 neutral site and 1 road game yearly.

St john's two preseason NIT games at the garden were not home games. Some rpi's have them as home, some rpr's (espn I think) has them as neutrals.

actually just looking on the official NCAA site- they were home games:
http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball ... etball-rpi
it makes more sense to have them as home games because MSG is one of their home courts. Just like the BET is counted as home games for them.

Maybe having more than 2 games away from home would be something smart that St John's could do. At least Tulsa OOC played @ Wichita and a neutral site vs Oklahoma St.
You can do what St John's did, but you better be ready to face the consequences if you lose games at home like St John's has done. They changed the RPI to reward teams more for going on the road.

Now for the facts:
St. John's SOS: 22
Tulsa SOS: 110
St. John's OOC SOS: 52
Tulsa OOC SOS: 123
So, St. John's should schedule more like Tulsa? Why? Tulsa's OOC schedule was awful.
Maybe Tulsa should do more of what St. John's did and actually win some games on the road. Despite having only 2 games away from home, St. John's won them both - at Syracuse, one of the toughest road venues to play at, and against a super tough AAC opponent Tulane, who beat both Cincinnati and Memphis on the road this year.
I'm sure that it's highly competitive road schedule is why Tulsa lost to Oral Roberts (192 RPI), a team that is notoriously tough to play in their place (?). Of course they also lost the ?Wichita State and Oklahoma State games you mentioned, so what good did it do them?
St. John's was 10-2 OOC with the only losses to Duke and Gonzaga, both top 10 teams. So, what in the world are you talking about when you say losing games at home? Wanna talk about losing games at home? How about Tulsa who lost to a bad SE Oklahoma State OOC at home. That's Division II, SEOS! That's a Southeast Oklahoma State team that had never beaten a Division I school since joining the NCAA 20 years ago. Never. What do you think the consequences of that will be?

What are you talking about? Most all great teams hardly play away from home. Kansas and especially Syracuse are notorious for this and they are not penalized.
