actually billyjack- just remembered something. The win vs Franklin Pierce doesn't count(d2). So if St John's finishes 19-12, it's really 18-12. If you look at that RPI by record it's 51.9. They wouldn't jump up enough in a win vs Creighton/lose to 2nd seed at all to make the tourney. For them to get to 19-11, with 8-10 in conference, would require a Duke win. Or go 9-9 in conference with a Duke loss. So they would need to go 9-7 the rest of the way in the last 16 games.

Just ran RPI Wizard, plugging in losses in close games to result in 18-12, 8-10, including a loss to Duke. They project an RPI of 48. Definitely on the bubble, but looking like it could fall on the right side of the bubble. Of course things could change depending on results in the BE Tournament and depending on how the chips fall for other bubble teams.

Bottom line is that St. John's is still a viable contender at 18-12, 8-10.

Re: RPI RANKING: FEEL FREE TO ADD OTHER RANKINGS

Postby stever20 » Wed Jan 14, 2015 1:39 am

just plugged in stuff to RPI Wizard putting them at 18-12 and 8-10(with loss to Duke)- and then adding in a win vs Creighton in the 7/10 game and a loss to Seton Hall in the 2/7 game. Came up with a RPI of 50, with a 19-13 record. That is extremely on the bubble- one of the last teams in or first teams out. Going to be a nervous season for them.

The thing that would be such a killer for the Duke game is it's another home game loss.

One thing I don't like with the Duke game is the surrounding schedule. Just would be all too easy to see St John's having a bad game with one of these 3 games- @ DePaul, Marquette,<Duke> and @ Creighton. The thing is- the road to 8 conference wins pretty much requires wins in all 3 of those games surrounding the Duke game. The DePaul and Creighton are big ones because they are the best bets for road wins in conference play. The Marquette game goes without saying of course. Hopefully St John's can stay focused in those 3 games....

Congratulations to DePaul on an exciting OT win over St. John's.

billyjack wrote:
St. John's, despite their 0-3 record, is in excellent shape:
They could go 8-10, and 1-1 in the BET, and their RPI would be at 43...!

To get to 8-10, they would need:
2 wins each vs DePaul, Creighton and Marquette, plus
2 home wins out of these 3 opponents --> Xavier, PC, and Seton Hall.
Anything beyond that is gravy, like stealing a road win at Butler, Georgetown, XU or PC.
BET would just be: W vs DePaul, L vs Villanova.

This gets them a 43 rpi and an NCAA bid.

Big East Standings

St. John's has now lost 4 of their last 5 games, and quite possibly their chance for an NCAA 'at-large' invitation.
