I just found rpiforecast. Can't believe I had never been before.

Anyway, St John's, despite their 0-3 record, is in excellent shape:
They could go 8-10, and 1-1 in the BET, and their RPI would be at 43...!

To get to 8-10, they would need:
2 wins each vs DePaul, Creighton and Marquette, plus
2 home wins out of these 3 opponents --> Xavier, PC, and Seton Hall.
Anything beyond that is gravy, like stealing a road win at Butler, Georgetown, XU or PC.
BET would just be: W vs DePaul, L vs Villanova.

This gets them a 43 rpi and an NCAA bid.

Easier said than done. I don't think they're going to be able to win all 6 against Depaul, Creighton, and Marquette. I doubt they'll beat two of X, PC, and Seton Hall at home, either.

Don't think your scenario can happen. If they are 8-10, they are no worse than 7th. I don't know that Creighton can win 4 Big East games to even have a chance to not finish 10th. Creighton winning 3 and DePaul winning none- that would take it to the top team they beat. Have got to think DePaul will have the better win in the one vs Xavier. So 7/10 should be St John's/Creighton. After that- St John's would play the 2nd seed- which would be between Seton Hall/Xavier/Butler. So DePaul/Villanova pretty much couldn't happen for St John's. And looking at the rest of the conference- not sure a 2nd place team could give them enough oomph to get in with a loss.

Also- with RPI forecast, they have a 6th place tie with Georgetown and St John's. Whichever team wins that tiebreaker would pretty much be in a must win QF game. Georgetown entering game with a 44.9 RPI, St John's with a 42 RPI.

How is 8-10 and RPI of 43 automatic?

(1) Starting out 0-3 in conference play is never 'being in excellent shape'.

(2) It is unusual for a for a team with a losing conference record to receive an at-large invitation, but it does happen:

At-large Selections - Teams Under .500 in Conference Play (CBS Sports - NCAA Tournament History)

(3) Crazy Joe muses about the Big East getting 8 teams in the NCAA Tournament:

Big East Gets Eight Teams In (Joe Lunardi, ESPN Insider - January 8, 2015)

Good luck with that one, Joe.

I think St. John's finishes 8-10 in the Big East and is squarely on the bubble. RPI 43, 8-10 Big East, and a 19-12 record entering the BET puts them squarely on the bubble. Unless they can pull out the Duke game.

A wise man on this board once told us that an RPI of 50 or better was a virtual lock. In my scenario, the Johnnies finish at 43 RPI.

Getting to 8-10 and 43 can be done without a major upset. They can go 8-7 in BE play the rest of the year. On the surface, that doesn't seem difficult for a team that's beaten some good teams in non-conference... Syracuse, Minnesota, St Mary's... they've dug a hole, but they don't have to go bonkers to lock up a bid. That was my point.

They're 43- but that's before the tourney. A win vs Creighton(looking at around 167 RPI) followed by a loss to a Xavier, Butler, or Seton Hall- would likely drop them at least 3-4 spots.

Your scenario probably would get them a bid- but the toughest part is actually doing it. Sweeping DePaul, Marquette, and Creighton- not a given at all- nor is winning 2/3 from Xavier, PC, or Seton Hall. Also like I said earlier, they could finish 6th and be in the 3/6 game where a loss and they are almost certainly out at 19-13.

If St. John's goes 8-10, we don't deserve a bid absent a deep run in the BET.
