Big East lands 6 of top 100 recruits for next year

Postby robinreed » Wed Dec 24, 2014 6:23 pm

It is still fairly early in the process and some changes could be made however 84 of the top 100 have committed and signed for next year. I am somewhat disappointed to see that we have only secured 6 of the top 100. Hopefully we can pick up at least 1 of the 16 uncommitted prospects.

Marquette has shown that their new coach is a spectacular recruiter as they have 3 of the 6 BE prospects.
Ellenson, Noskowiak and Cheatham at 4th, 70th and 80th give the Warriors an exceptional class incoming.

Brunson is Villanova's only top 100 recruit. He is listed 23rd.

Govan is Georgetown's only recruit in the top 100. He is listed 59th

Owens is ranked 90th in the top 100 and will be going to PC.

Of course we all know that there are many decent and a few excellent recruits in the second 100. Hopefully we will grab the best of them however when competing with the P5 (and all their money) that is not an easy goal to achieve.

I am somewhat disappointed the Muskies do not have someone in this list however we have learned to be good with who we are able to get. This however is not the best way to run a program.

I should have added that VCU got 2 of the top 100 prospects. This is more than any BE team except Marquette. Just a note for those who support and those who oppose VCU to the Big East expansion.

I suppose I should have added the ESPN recruiting rankings for the top 40 teams. Here are the Big East teams which have made the list.

Marquette 5

Villanova 18

Providence 29

G-town 37

If I understand this correctly it is for all recruiting for next year not just the top 100. Again VCU makes the list at 25. Please note I am not pushing for VCU.
This gives the BE a somewhat better ranking than the top 100 list does, one we can certainly live with.

SHU, X and Gtown all had a huge recruiting years last year. There simply might not be room for multiple players for 2015. Nova is red shirting Bridges who was a top 100 last year (love having that luxury), so in effect they drop 2 seniors and add 2 top 100 players to take their place--one of which is a top 3 PG in the nation. We're good with that!

No need to micromanage these lists. I think with the exception of SJU and DePaul every team has improved it's recruiting since committing to the BE.

Obviously can't speak for other schools, but it just seems like last year was a huge year for the Big East, how much open room could each team possibly have? Also, in the Friars case, they have 3 guys-Owens, Drew Edwards and Ryan Fazekas-all three are actually rated the same on ESPN, basically stating, the other two are just on the outside, but probably no better or worse than any of the guys 80-100 range.

Spot on. Xavier redshirted 2 of their recruits from last year (London, sumner) so they technically have 3 for next year.

Justin Patton is a center who committed to Creighton and is a top 100 recruit in both Rivals and Scout.

So does Mac red shirt Patton next year or just sit him on the deep bench and play him 3 minutes a game? :)

Hey now. Believe me when I say that Creighton fans are both perplexed and upset by Mac's decision to not redshirt Leon and to then not play him for serious minutes.
As for Patton, he weighs only around 190-200 pounds, really light for a 6'11 center. He's probably going to have to put on at least 30 pounds to matchup to Big East centers. That doesn't mean he's going to redshirt next year, though. He runs the floor well, blocks and alters a ton of shots, and is a good screener and passer. His jump shot is still a work in progress. I think it could go either way next year. Also, keep in mind that Zach Hanson and Geoff Groselle should return next year at the 5 (though Geoff graduated and is going to start working on his MBA, so there's no guarantee he will return).
