Have you seen some of the NBE games on Fox Sports? Have you seen empty arenas at St. Johns? Depaul? Seton Hall? Even Georgetown? When Fox wants to grow, don't tell me they don't care about Dayton's following because Dayton is a good atmosphere on TV. Every year they have one of the top tv markets as far as ratings go for college basketball. I know everyone on here hates ESPN, but that is why they are always on their pre-season tournaments. Dayton outdrew Gonzaga last year to Maui and this year outdrew Uconn in Puerto Rico.

Ohio, I do not know that anyone here disputes what you are saying about the Dayton fanbase/attendence. I think where your point fails however is that you seem to believe that FOX somehow benefits from sold out arenas. They don't. They make their money on selling advertising and from carriage fees. Presumably, because of X's nearby presence, adding Dayton isn't going to add a lot of additional revenues in terms of additional carriage fees. While you can attempt to argue that sold out houses means that there are better TV ratings for those teams, I, as a fan of a school with top 5 attendance nationally last year, think that is a big time stretch. Just because a team may be popular in its local community does not mean it has a national following that would lead to some noticeable ratings bump, especially in the sport of college basketball where there are just so many D1 programs.

Similarly, the number of fans that travel does not benefit FOX either. Now ESPN, which owns some MTEs, does stand to benefit from ticket sales to those events. FOX though, at least until the time that they create their own MTEs, does not get any monetary bump because fans may attend an MTE.

I am sure that if FOX were to be picking expansion teams, they would push for big schools with huge fanbases and national followings, not small private schools.

ok, Bjuejay, When the new BE was formed they selected Creighton - as small private school from a small market surrounded by farmland for as far as they eye can see. Lots of cows/sheep/pigs but no humans to speak of. UD is a 150 year old top tier private Catholic reseach university sitting in the middle of one of the top 60 min population centers in the US and has the close the best local and travelling fan base.

What is your point?

Stuff like this makes me laugh. "Hey, Omaha is in Nebraska, which is in the Plains, so Omaha is, like, nothing but farms and cows and stuff, man". Clearly those who say that have never been to Omaha. And I've unfortunately been to Dayton multiple times. Omaha is 10x more "metropolitan" than Dayton could dream of.

I'm glad Dayton is a good school. Apparently, you didn't get the memo on Creighton, which has been the top rated Midwest University for like 16 straight years. Your fans are good, but Creighton runs over you on that front as well. Enjoy that A-10 gauntlet, bud.

The point is that Creighton is not a "big school with huge fanbase and national following" as mentioned by Bluejay above, it is a small private school. UD is a large private school, with huge fan base in the New York, PA, NJ and Chicago and Ohio, i.e. a national following. I have been to Omaha Nebraska and yes it is very much farm country, spare population for miles and miles. Look at a population density map, compare Ohio to Nebraska, sorry to say this but true. All you have to do is look at the closeups of the fans in your arena when on the broadcasts and it is very evident.

Did I misread that last sentence Murphy, or are you implying that Creighton is not diverse enough? Cause honestly a group of private schools isn't exactly going to be the picture of diversity.

In any case, even if this supposed "national following" is enough spark the interest of a TV exec (I don't think it is) all of those media markets you mentioned are already covered by the current schools. Dayton wouldn't be adding anything in this regard

No I am not saying the Creighton is not diverse enough, the fans seem to have that "country look", not that there is anything wrong with that. I agree that a group of private schools is anything but diverse.

Agree that the media markets mentioned are already covered, however when you look at ORD,NYK,PHL, etc that is an enormous population to draw from. At least 50 times the OMA market

Creighton has plenty of alumni in major cities throughout the U.S. too...

That got ugly in a hurry. I guess SLU fans have pretty much moved on...so that others may argue.

Part of me is like, "this guy..." and the other part of me says "Don't feed the troll." I have never heard of, let alone met, someone in Chicago who has graduated from Dayton. Not only that, but there are already 8 "local" D-1 teams (DePaul, NU, UofI, ND, Loyola, UIC, Chicago State, NIU), on top of 3 Pro sports teams that matter in the winter, all fighting for air time.

Put another way, there is literally no one in the Chicago area thinking, "Oh man, you know what I'd like to do today? I'd like to watch a regular season college basketball game. What's more, I'd like to find an out-of-market game featuring a league where the closest team is 300 miles away. That sounds like fun." In fact, I'd venture to guess that there are three MVC teams who would draw bigger viewership numbers in Chicago than Dayton would. I would also imagine the other markets he has listed are very similar.

So no, the "Major TV markets Dayton would bring" doesn't exist. No one cares about his school. If anyone did, they'd already be here.

Dayton: "we sell out all of our games" , "We host the First Round"

Everyone else: "First Round?" "Who cares." "Your "arena" is a dump". "what the hell else is there to do in Dayton??"
