Conner Frankamp leaving Kansas

The home for Big East hoops

I know less about this situation than most others, but having spent some time in Wichita, there are two obvious issues in their favor. First is the home angle, having family and friends at each game. But is that important? Only the Frankamp family can tell you. The second is that WSU has just about an automatic dance card. They will be good this year, and with Baker and VanFleet only juniors, very good again next year. Wichita is as compassionate about the Shockers as Omaha is about the Jays. Not picking favorites here, just saying WSU has one distinct advantage that being their pathway to the NCAA through the Valley.

What is kind of funny here is that you have the Koch dollars in Wichita and the Buffett dollars in Omaha. The two richest families in the US. How about a bidding war!

Wichiturd is already two scholarships over for next season, though Ron Baker is as good as gone, lessening the strain some.

Some on Shockernet are thinking that he might have to walk on there for three semesters. Now, they're all nuts anyway, but if Marshall doesn't want to fire two people it could possibly be on the table I suppose. When Armstead transferred from Oregon to go there he paid his redshirt season because they were out of free rides.

The NCAA ticket is a valid point. However, the flip side of that is they play in a watered down league where he isn't going to be challenged much. By all accounts, this kid has NBA aspirations, and if he wants to be tested, surely the Big East is a better place to do that than the MVC where he's facing Evansvilles and Loyola Chicagos on a weekly basis.

Also, many believe Baker is gone for sure next season, and if Van Vleet has another big time season, he could be as well. I wouldn't necessarily say they are a lock to be a great team next season, but Marshall is a good coach and I'm sure he'll figure it out. Also, Creighton has more room at SG right now, regardless of who leaves or stays at Wichita. They redshirted a few last season, and they have a four-man freshman class coming in with two shooting guards. While it is true that Creighton has quite a few wings as well, I would be shocked if he didn't start for us as the 2 right away.

I have no idea what will happen, but the folks who are usually good sources feel optimistic about Creighton's chances. We shall see.

If Creighton plays their cards right they should be able to sell elite shooters on their success and system. Kid sounds like a perfect fit. And regarding ease of WSU making the NCAA, have to think things get much harder when Marshall leaves.

I'll also add the fact that if making the tourney was the only consideration he could have stayed at Kansas with their streak of 8 (or I guess it's 12) B12 championships. He could have not transferred and been virtually guaranteed to make the tournament. As is, no one knows what a kid will decide, but I feel like Creighton is such a perfect fit for his skill set.

In this day and age of kids transferring all the time, if I were a college coach, I would keep at least one, perhaps two, scholarships in my pocket every year just for these types of opportunities. I know Jay W. has not had more than 10 scholarship players in the program for a couple of years now. I think that number dissuades kids at the end of the bench from transferring and keeps a spot open should he need it. Over the past few years we have used the space to bring in guys like Tony Chennault (from Wake F.) and Enis (from Rice).

To be entirely fair, Creighton doesn't exactly have the same amount of homegrown talent nearby as, say, a school located in Philadelphia. Mac can't just travel around town and see multiple high level D1 players in the local high schools. Creighton will always have to do more actual player development than our conference mates in huge population centers. Occasionally, that development may necessitate a redshirt year, thereby tying up a scholarship.

Now, all of that being said, Creighton still has 2 scholarships available for next year to use on transfers (at the semester or in the spring) or spring signees.

Well Mac added three quality transfers this year: Mo Watson from Boston U, Cole Huff from Nevada and Ricky Kreklow from California, so I guess maybe he has. While Frankamp would have been nice, I will take both Cole and Mo and both of our recruits over him.
