Expansion: UAB to reunite with Marquette and DePaul in NBE?

thing is for hoops, UAB is in a relative down period for them. last 3 years plus they've gone only 51-51 with 2 losing years. 125/164/156 final year ratings in ken pom.

Since someone brought up UMass, what are they going to do now? They have no home for football. Do they drop football too? From what I understand they have lost a ton of money on the program.

I've always thought that if they can get their hoops program turned around, they would be a good fit for us. We need some bigger schools with potential for producing good TV ratings. UMass is unique in that they are one of the few large state schools not already affiliated with a F5 conference.

If we're going to go that route, I'd rather bring in a VCU, but that's just me. UMass would be fine, but VCU would give the conference some extra cache. As for the football program, I think schools should dump football if their athletic departments are getting dragged down because of them, and by all accounts, UMass' definitely is.

IF UMass dropped football and
IF they can turn their hoops program around which has never won a single NCAA Tournament game in program history without someone named John Calipari as coach and
IF they could deliver the Boston market (which frankly, despite all the colleges, is a lousy college sports market) and
IF the conference leaders would agree to having a state school in the conference of all private schools....

UMASS doesn't deliver Boston though and their fan support sucks. Also, they've had very little success until recently.

UNLV has a great basketball tradition along with a big arena that is in line with other Big East schools. Unfortunately, we run into the "Gonzaga Problem" in that their location is absurdly out of the way. Point being, this is certainly a trend that everyone should keep an eye out for because some good basketball schools might become available.

UMASS doesn't deliver Boston though and their fan support sucks. Also, they've had very little success until recently.

I still would heavily consider a flagship state university in a state like that.

Luckily for Hawaii, they are MWC in football only and Big West (I think) in all other sports, so they won't have to worry about conference affiliations if they drop football.
