It's a shame though, I see people asking questions on the site that I can answer like where to get a "Once A Johnny Always a Johnny" shirt (I have an extra one and they are not for sale in any store). But I can't answer because I'm banned. Oh, well!

I just saw Rysheed Jordan on campus before…walked right past him. He is crazy tall for a guard every bit that 6'4. Pumped for tipoff tonight. We need these recruits in the worst way.

That Redmen.com site is a weird site. I posted something and the moderator emails me and tells me to check earlier posts by other people and be sure I don't repeat what other people have already posted. Then I returned to Redmen.com months later to post a comment and the moderator banned me from posting anything new. The heck with that website. Lazy moderators with attitudes. The moderator gave me 1 warning and I'm suppose to remember that months later ? Holylandhoops is so much better !

Can't be worse than CSNBBS where mods come on by to talk shit.

I'm not even sure why they even bother starting a forum when only like 4 people are allowed to talk on it. It's definitely not intended for most people to use. Holyland is way better. Much more professional setup and you can speak your mind. Barely anyone at Redmen.com has any connection with the team either. Basically one huge forum of old men telling kids to get off their lawn. Lol...

I said barely any which means a few do. The majority of that site are guys who grew up in the Chris Mullin era and even earlier. There just seems to be a disconnect between old and new fans. The old ones refuse to call us the Red Storm and insist on Redmen even though 99% of SJ fans today don't even know that used to be the name. They always reminisce about the 80's and Mullin and all that…we weren't even born yet. Younger SJ fans have a lot more anxiety because we've only seen SJ mostly fail in our lifetimes. Older SJ fans criticize this anxiety being from the golden era when SJ was actually a national power. It's two different cultures.

As I said, I'm not the only one who has had lots of complaints about the site. Countless others used to message me about how you get banned for posting often unless you are one of the golden boys. I even had one main poster support me when I was about to get banned, but even he caved into the peer pressure and decided to join them mocking me. It's by far the worst forum for SJ hoops run by politics and rarely lets people into their old club.

I'm from the Chris Mullin era. I entered St.John's in the fall of 1984 and it was amazing on campus. I'm 50 now and I still feel like a kid. I call them the Redmen. Still have my Redmen sweatshirt. Ronald Reagan visited St. John's in the spring of 1985. He said a special tree was growing in Queens called a Mulberry tree- Mullin and Berry. Reagan mentioned that we were #1 in the nation in basketball and talked about Lou Carnesecca. . Gave his speech in Alumni hall. My tuition in 1987 was $2000 a semester. You pay $2000 for the books now. Those were the days !!!!

I started in the fall of '99 at SJU and I hate the name Red Storm. Just look at my name an avatar, I even got it tattooed on my arm. Our logo and mascot changes every few years now. We have no consistency because we let some student name our team and come up with that stupid mascot. How can anyone get behind the name "The Red Storm"? Oh and the best the team ever was in my tenure as a Johnny was my freshman year. Ever since then it's been one long disappointment with one shinning season of awesomeness that ended prematurely.

I would definitely prefer Redmen to Red Storm and that's actually a really cool logo for Redmen. What infuriates me is that we have this PC culture where anything referring to Indians is "racist", but not across the board. FSU is allowed to keep their Seminoles name with all the stereotypical chants and their mascot. William and Mary are still allowed to be the "Tribe". Countless high schools, colleges, and pro sports teams are still allowed to keep theirs, so why did we have to cave in? It's the kind of thing you either condemn across the board and remove any and all Indian references from athletics, or you allow all of them to keep it. While it sucks that we got stuck with a bad name and lost our branding due to PC culture, I think we should embrace Red Storm to help the brand. It will only confuse people if some are saying "let's go Johnnies", some are saying "let's go Red Storm", and some are saying "let's go Redmen".

With that said, those who went here in the Mullin era should be extremely thankful. You paid less than a current day SUNY price for a private school that is now over 100k for all 4 years. You also got to see probably the best player who will ever come through our doors in Mullin. You saw our team ranked #1…now it's a miracle if we are ranked at all. You saw countless NCAA tourney's, I saw 1 (2011 when we lost right away). The academic standards were probably also better, because now the school simply serves as one giant diversity center emphasizing diversity over academic standards which is part of the reason I think our fan base is so tiny. When you have people from all over the world from all different socioeconomic levels you have less in common and are less likely to join together to support a basketball team IMO.

Was St. John's forced to change their name? I know Marquette wasn't forced to give up warriors but the administration was bribed by the local tribe. Either way, it's probably time to move on. I don't know when St. John's made their change but it's been an entire generation for Marquette. Warriors is still very popular, however I think it would alienate a lot more people if we went back now.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

I think we should have changed it, i'm not advocating for still being the Redmen. We changed the name of our own accord, we are a very diverse school so having such a kinda racist name meant it should have been changed. I just have an issue with the name Red Storm and the bad logos/mascots we went through the last 21 years.

FSU has gotten full permission and blessing from the Seminole tribe to use it's mascot, (which isn't racist) and name.

You need to do some research before your next diatribe. No one forced anyone to do anything. We chose to change our nickname and logo because it isn't a name that should have been kept.
