Fox Sports 1 Update

I think half the battle is just getting people to know FOX Sports 1 exists and where it is in the line up. That's why the Baseball Playoffs are going to pay dividends. We don't need them to be promoting the BE during them for them to help our ratings. Just people knowing it exists and where to find it will help people tune in to BE basketball games. I mean Basketball fans know about the Big East and now casual fans will be able to find the station we're on.

Also frankly the location of baseball teams that FS1 has had- SF, Stl, LA, and Washington- about as bad of a final 4 as we could have drawn up. No Milwaukee(in until the end of the race), no New York, no Philadelphia, no Cincy, no Chicago. 2 western teams.

The series likely ends tonight I think. St Louis with the Molina injury just a shell of themselves.

Big East fans in Big East cities are already aware of FS1. The four teams in the NL playoffs (3 are non-BE cities) have passionate national fanbases with rabid fans (less so with the Nats, but Bryce Harper is the new face of MLB along with Trout), so more national eyeballs probably tuned into FS1 for the first time.

How can having close playoff games with a Los Angeles team be bad...? Metro L.A. has what, 15 million people...? San Francisco and the Bay Area must have another 5 or 6 million. Two Pac-12 cities, which can help Pac-12 ratings. Cardinals fans are everywhere. Plus baseball fans are everywhere, and baseball has compelling storylines which attract fans from everywhere.

A less helpful scenario may have included Miami, Atlanta and San Diego, but that still would've been fine because of exposure and introducing new viewers. Newbies will be impressed by the quality and will return.

Regarding BE fans already knowing about FS1...
One time when the Red Sox were in the playoffs, Chris Myers was roving the grandstand, and started interviewing Steven King, who was reading a book. Myers asked him his opinion on the Sox, then asked King if he was "reading one of his (own) books"... King looked at him like he was nuts, and said "why would I ever read one of my OWN books...???"
Anyway, I think there's some sort of connection there...

I usually agree with a lot of your points but I actually disagree completely here. Outside of New York, Boston or maybe Chicago (huge markets) I don't think FS1 could have done better with the teams it had. A lot of sports fans in Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Philadelphia etc already are aware of FS1 because of the Big East. Hitting some other markets (LA especially) I would think is great for the exposure of the channel as a whole. I think finding new markets/eyeballs is more important than overlapping already existing ones.

That being said, I do agree with your point that assuming that MLB ratings correlate to CBB ratings is probably innacurate, who knows how many people will really continue to tune into FS1 ever again if they are simply a Giants fan or Cardinals fan or whatever.

I think Fox would have been luckier had they had the AL. LA, KC, Detroit, and Baltimore. No Big East cities- but 3 with fairly close proximity to a Big East City.

I think fox made a mistake if there is a correlation of baseball to cbb fans- in not airing ads letting them know that Big East Basketball is coming soon. So if these are new viewers viewing FS1 for the very first time, do they know today that FS1 has Big East Basketball? No. Having an ad or two would have sold that to them. Have one of those funny Gus/Raft commercials that we all love- maybe with a funny correlation to baseball.

Just to play devils advocate, if you end up with the AL you actually lose even more games. And I'm also not sure how the TV times were decided (if it was by network or by series) but the Orioles/Tigers series had terrible start times for ratings purposes.

Just to play devils advocate, if you end up with the AL you actually lose even more games. And I'm also not sure how the TV times were decided (if it was by network or by series) but the Orioles/Tigers series had terrible start times for ratings purposes.

lol unfortunately too true. Only thing - is it the league that determines who shares with MLB network or is it always going to be FS1 sharing with them.

Just amazing this postseason total- had only 25 games instead of 36 games. The minimum possible thru now is only 22.

I think you guys miss the point that BE commercials wont do no whole lot. In a month when BE is on most baseball fans will have long forgotten that commercial they saw. When any sports season starts up i check the tv schedule for whichever team i. Rooting for to see time and channel. I dont just go to espn, abc, fs1, nbcsports, etc and see who is playing because chances are if its not my team i dont care.
