Disliked: Wisconsin
Annoying: Wisconsin
Hated: Wisconsin

Honorable mention: Notre Dame

Back in the day, Notre Dame and Louisville could challenge for at least one of the spots, but hate will always be reserved for the school of rodents up the road.
My parents and my sister are all Domers, but despite MU and ND's rivalry (ND basketball has played Marquette more than any other school), while there was no love lost for ND, I always maintained that Notre Dame was a rival. MU and ND fought like brothers fight or cousins fight.

Wisconsin was the enemy.

They are the worst, and their fans are completely delusional. They think their football program is a national power (despite never claiming a national championship), and they seem to think college basketball was invented in 2000 (probably because Wisconsin failed to make the NCAAs once between 1948 and 1993.)
Trying to explain the rivalry, I'd always just say that "There's a lot of families with both MU and ND sweaters in their drawers. There's not a lot of families with both Marquette and Wisconsin sweaters in their drawers," and it's easy to see why.

MU: Smaller, Private, Catholic, Urban, More Conservative, Basketball school, Mostly recruit Black players who are enouraged to express themselves and play more above the rim, student body drawn mostly from outside Wisconsin

UW: Enormous, Public, State School, Rural, More Liberal, Football school, Mostly recruit White players to "play within the system" and slow the game down, student body drawn mostly from Wisconsin

It also fits neatly into the Men in Blazers' outlook on the sports world as it being "A world where you're either red or blue."

Conclusion. I hate Wisconsin. I would watch them lose at checkers.

"Child, why arst thou hitting thyself?"
Al McGuire: "What is this?"
Waiter: "Mr. McGuire, that is a cull lobster. Sometimes when the lobsters are in the tank, they fight. This one lost a claw."
Al McGuire: "Well then take this one away and bring me the winner."

Butler fans probably won't take this too well, but I really think they are becoming the Dayton of the league.

I would welcome going 9-9 in the league at this point. Granted, I wasn't around Dayton-X, but I got the impression that Dayton fans always thought they would be awesome, then might tease their fans a little by doing well in the non-conference before inevitably ending up around a .500 mark in the A-10 and going to the NIT.

Is it because we have a non-scholarship football team that plays in the PFL? I guess I'll need some clarification on your comment before I can decide whether or not to be offended. At this point it seems like something to strive for.

I can't imagine any scenario where you should not be offended: becoming "the Dayton of the league" isn't a positive direction for any program.

Xavier:

Disliked - N/A.

Annoying - Used to be Dayton, but I don't think about them much anymore now that we've moved on. Nonetheless, never have so many thought so highly of themselves for so few good reasons. Besides, once Archie pulls a Sean in the very near future, they'll probably disappear again for another 30 years.

Hated - UC. Yet even here UC on the needle has moved towards "Disliked" and away from "Hated" because of Xavier's recent success against them. This was rather white-hot during the Huggins regime - a Catholics vs Convicts thing. Same dynamics as Marquette and Whisky - large state, public school, etc. versus the small Catholic school. A difference is the 3.5 miles in proximity and same town thing, which Nova fans understand as part of the Big 5. The only thing that keeps UC closer to the Hated end of the meter is the fact that Mick Cronin is such a troll and tool. We affectionately refer to him as the Yellow Toothed Gnome (YTG).

I hate the ACC, Syracuse and Duke.

I dislike Seton Hall and Georgetown.

I'm annoyed by the AAC since they are just little children who should;t be paid any mind.

This just shows you how good a coach Bo Ryan is. Pound for pound, the best coach in the country IMO.

Dislike: Indiana mostly because of Tom Crean
Annoying: Dayton, its a dump of a school in a dump of a city
Hate: Illinois, all their fans think they should be a huge power in all sports and cant comprehend why five star recruits aren't lining up to go to champaign. Then they claim that their academics are too stringent for any of the really good players to get in. Sorry but when your school is pushing 50,000 students you're not selective, you're just a middle of the road program that mooches off the money brought in by Ohio state

Only two probrams I've ever heard of Marquette hating and that's Wisconsin and Notre Dame. Some people like to act as though Louisville is there to but they're out of our league. So for all three UW/ND.

Dislike: Syracuse. I was going to list them as hated, but we'll probably rarely play them again now that they're in the ACC. They still have the most obnoxious fans in the world though.

Annoying: St. John's. That sense of entitlement so many of their fans have just because it's located in nyc.

Hated: Rutgers. Better dead than red.

Disliked: North Carolina. They don't fall under hating per se because I like the university itself and don't have enough daily contact with their fanbase to hate them; if I did they'd be hated. Their behavior to Wragge when Marshall broke his wrist on a clean and unintentional play showed just what they're made of.

Annoying - has to be Nebraska. Umm, no, you aren't the premier university in the state, just the biggest. However their fans tend to be nice people, if delusional, so they only qualify as annoying in my book.

Hated? Has to be the team from a craphole Kansas town whose college cant draw a rating from US News, even though they rate like 700 schools. Plus, their whole 'root angry' persona is ridiculous and laughable; they remind me of the fanbase version of Joe Pesci in Goodfellas. You think Creighton fans have a thin skin should take a good look at them - it's a group so delusional that there is a guy on their board who contends that the only reason they can't land a 4 star recruit is due to...peer pressure on recruits to go bigger. They hate everyone, are constantly on the attack in lieu of defending their position on subjects, and are totally convinced of their own enduring superiority.

If there will be one upside in the whole realignment carnage, it'll be watching them get left behind.

I'm OK with him. The only negative thing he could muster about Butler is a weird bleacher configuration

Xudash wrote:Okay Mods - that's enough. Ban this asshole from this site. I recall, when leaving the A10 board, that they established a zero tolerance policy towards fans of non-members. We should have that here, especially when some idiot like this tries to paint one of our institutions with a false brush.

He continues to come to this site to insinuate that Xavier is in financial trouble. Schools that finance a $19 million classroom renovation out of free cash flow - no debt involved - aren't in financial trouble. Schools involved in 9 digit development projects (over 2 phases) aren't in financial trouble. Schools that refinance their debt through strong debt ratings to improve their financing capacity aren't in financial trouble. Budget adjustments are just that: adjustments.

UD has a mediocre basketball program and a major locational problem: Dayton. UD is exactly where it should be: not in the Big East. This guy is jealous of Xavier. That should not be our problem here.

UD FAN, take a hike. You're a classless asshole who stepped over the line - again - with your idiotic insinuation. It gives me great pleasure knowing you are stuck, having to root for the Cryers.

Holy crap, you guys need to relax
