Will we ever get raided?

Postby DudeAnon » Sat Oct 04, 2014 8:13 pm

Out of curiosity I jumped over to UConns realignment board and a lot of them mention Georgetown possibly getting added to the ACC. How likely is that we are raided? I can't see why it wouldn't happen.

To me, I think if it was going to happen, it would have already happened quite frankly.

You can't see how we COULDN'T get raided? Well it's simple, why would GTown go to the ACC where it will have zero say in any conference matters and will be pushed out whenever the ACC feels like it. Instead they are a leader in a conference that makes a lot of money and they have a lot of pull. Why would they break away from the other Catholic 6 after all they just went through? Not a chance in hell the ACC raids us for GTown. Also I don't think the ACC will have a lot of support for this from the FB schools like FSU, Clemson and VT. Those are the schools who could actually leave the ACC when the GoR is up. The BBall schools of the ACC know this too.

At this point I think we've seen it all. Wouldn't be shocked at all if Nova and G'Town became the new Pitt/Cuse and left in the middle of the night for a P5 conference. SJ, SHU, Butler, Creighton, PC, Xavier, Marquette, etc. would be left in the dust. Whenever I look at our conference and say I'm proud and thankful, it gets raided. I did that in 2011 and I did it when we broke away with some top teams still intact. Hope I'm wrong.

Nova and G'Town are both top academic schools with top basketball programs. Nova could easily upgrade to FBS football since they won the FCS championship and show promise. G'Town has a terrible FCS football team but could join in all sports but football.

Hope it doesn't happen but I feel like they realize they deserve better than being here.

Wow! That's the craziest take I've ever read on this board (and that's saying a lot)! You are claiming that Villanova and Georgetown would leave the Big East after making the bold move of going "all in" for basketball just a year ago? They'd be painting themselves right back into the corner they were in when they belonged to the old (hybrid) Big East where the FB schools ruled the roost. Didn't both schools already make the decision (by that bold move) NOT to upgrade their football programs to FBS status?

Your thinking makes no sense from whatever angle one looks at it!

You can't look at this as a hoops fan. These alignment decisions are all about FB. Nova looked at upgrading to FBS years ago and it wasn't in the cards. That ship has sailed. If it had we probably would be sitting in the AAC right now. Ugh. Nova likes where it is and is not the least bit attractive to the ACC or any other p5 conf because of FB.
Go Nova!

For the P5 schools football is everything. It is said that 85% of all college sports income is from football with all other sports constituting only 15%. Of course the greatest part of expenses are also in football. However the P5 will and do make all decisions from a football first if not football only viewpoint. This is why UConn has not been taken by a major conference thus far and why it will not be taken into the P5 in future. Of course nova could join a conference like the Sun Belt but first they would have to build a 40K plus stadium and other football facilities would need to be updated. However the Sun Belt has a TV contract which only pays about 20% of the Big East-Fox contract. Why would nova bother with all of those additional expenditures to receive less money and be in a league which does not know what basketball really is. The Big East is likely safe. True, one should never say never however in this circumstance I think we can at least say ALMOST NEVER.

It's a very remote possibility. For this to happen 1) The football realignment carousel would have to have stopped spinning. There would have to be 4- 16 team leagues. 2) The ACC/B12/whatever conference would have to be thinking that now that we've squeezed every last dollar out of football where else can we get money. 3) There would have to be interest in an 18 or 20 league basketball conference. Using the conferences proposed in the other thread: "Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Texas Christian, Texas Tech, West Virginia, Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, NC State, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest." They could easily add 2(Georgetown and Nova) or 4( add St. John's and Marquette too) for Basketball and all other sports and go to a division set up of either 9 and 9 or 10 and 10. Where you play everyone in your division and then play a few cross over games too.

But don't think for a second that Georgetown and Nova wouldn't leave. I'm sure we totally would if invited. For the same reason everyone else left: Money. We'd get more money from TV, we'd get better attendance playing Duke and Syracuse every year rather than DePaul and Butler. Sorry those are just the facts. Casual fans care about big names and these bigger public schools just have more alumni to help us fill our arenas.

That being said, It's a long shot that any of the Football 4 conferences would be looking to add non football members. So I don't think it's an issue, but any team in the BE would definitely left if asked. It's just not likely to happen.

In the unlikely event that a team is invited to a P5, it would have to deal with the fact that it has pledged its media rights to the BE. It is far more likely that uconn joins.

The Big East is not getting raided by anyone. The only conferences with better TV deals are the P5. The Big East makes more TV money than all football conferences other than the P5. So schools like Nova and G'Town who have football programs would need a P5 invite. That's not coming. The P5 do not need any more hoops programs regardless of how good they are. Football will still drive the decision and there are plenty of established football programs out there to be plucked if necessary. We are good right now. The good thing about our league is that we are immune from realignment rumors. It's a good place to be.
