How Much Did Your School Lose By?

Postby NJRedman » Wed Jul 09, 2014 4:22 pm

In another thread a poster mentioned over 10 losses they lost by so and so combined points. That got me thinking and for some reason I used the free time on my hands to make up this list of each team in the order they finished. It shows how many regular season conference losses they have (The BET was not included), how many combined points they lost by and on average how many points did they lose by.

Not trying to make any point with this list, just thought it was interesting so I researched it and this is my work. Do with it what you will.

Villanova 2 losses 49 points total 24.5 avg loss
Creighton 4 losses 36 points total 9 avg loss
Providence 8 losses 88 points total 11 avg loss
Xavier 8 losses 83 points total 10.375 avg loss
St. John's 8 losses 55 points total 6.87 avg loss
Marquette 9 losses 97 points total 10.77 avg loss
Georgetown 10 losses 124 points total 12.4 avg loss
Seton Hall 12 losses 95 points total 7.91 avg loss
Butler 14 losses 160 points total 11.42 avg loss
DePaul 15 losses 218 points total 14.53 avg loss

Observations:
-Three teams lost all their games by a combined score of over 100 and one of those went higher than 200.

-Villanova dominated the league but in there only losses they themselves were dominated. Both games 20+ point blow outs.

-Seton Hall despite losing 12 games kept their loss total below 100 points and had the second best avg loss %.

Interesting thread... some of those losses were in OT, meaning Butler's 11-pt number could actually be lower. St John's lost some tight ones.

Butler lost 4 of its 14 conference games (St. John's x2, @Villanova, @Creighton) by 89 points, or 22.25 ppg.

Their remaining 10 conference games they lost by 71 points or 7.1 ppg. I'm sure there are outliers in every team, my main point is that they actually were in the majority of those games and typically lost them down the stretch. Interesting to look at though.

just looking- average MOV in conference play was 11.17. If you take the conference tournament (with it's 6.33 avg MOV)- and add it to that, it's an average of 10.73 per game.

If you take out the Creighton and Villanova games, the average MOV drops from 11.17 down to 9.67. Villanova's avg MOV was 14.25 and Creighton's was 14.07.

Interesting stats. Those Creighton Nova games still defy logic. As a general rule, however, i am not crazy about margin of victory stats. Two 10 point losses could be totally different games. In game A, it could be a one possesion game the entire game, but the team that is down has to resort to the fouling strategy the last min or two. In game B, a team could be up by 15 to 20 the entire game, put in the scrubs the last two mins, etc.

lol- see that all the time on both sides that you bring up. Still if you look at it- 9.67 for all games involving 3-10 not including 1 or 2 isn't bad at all.
