Tyler Dorsey decommits from Arizona

Postby Bill Marsh » Sun Jun 15, 2014 1:55 pm

Tyler Dorsey, a guard from St. John Bosco in California and the #12 overall player on 247 Sports ranking of players graduating in 2015, has announced that he has changed his mind from his January commitment to Arizona, according to CBC Sports.

According to the same article, two Big east schools, Marquette and St. John's, are 2 of the schools on his list, so obviously the Catholic school connection appears to help in getting his interest. He has a diverse list which also includes UConn from the Big east footprint as well as others from outside the P5 - UNLV, SMU, and Tulsa.

From what I read he wanted to play PG in college (and beyond) but at 6'4 it seems Miller & most others not in his inner circle feel he may really be a combo guard at this point. Not blaming Dorsey at all because as a 6'4 PG he'd be way more attractive and rare than as a SG. This is common issue nowadays for ballers with his height and skill level. I believe Shawn Livingston is the last person I recall that's actually pulled it off as a successful path to the league though.

Michael Carter-Williams from Syracuse was quite successful winning ROY in the nba as 6'6 pg. Kyle Anderson was a 6'9 PG for UCLA last year.

MCW after 1 season is considered a successful PG, really? Not saying he didn't look fantastic, but its 1 season on a horrible team. I remember when Tyreke Evans (6'6ish) won ROY playing PG for Sacramento, but he hasn't lasted as at the point since more like a SG now & a damn good one. Anyway you sound like you should know what I mean, it's hard af to be a "big" PG because you have to guard small PG's and that may be the deepest position in the NBA. Who is Kyle "SloMo" Anderson going to guard at the PG position next year?

You don't have to guard the guy that is listed as the same position as you. I imagine he would guard a SF if he made the team. There are a lot of players that can't guard anyone that are regarded as solid players (Kyrie Irving.)

That idea works well with forwards and some bigs, but with PG's if your team's PG doesn't do it who will, your 6'4+ SG, your 6'6+ SF, etc. Kyrie is a great example of a defensive liability at PG, which is why the Cavs starting backcourt of Irving & Waiters is so small to try to compensate IMO.

http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketb ... over-again
The 6-foot-4 St. John Bosco (Calif.) product is known more as a scorer than a distributor at this point, given his ability to get his own shot and make plays with the ball in his hands. It was more of the same at the NBPA Top 100 camp, as he was making shots in the mid-range and getting to the rim consistently.

Dorsey doesn't deny the score-first ability right now, but he seems his future at the one.

“I feel like that's my best position at the next level,” he said. “I have to build those skills and attributes to be able to play that in the NBA. You see the guards in the NBA, most of them are score-first, but also can make the right basketball play. Russell [Westbrook], Damian Lillard. I call them lead guards. That's probably my best position.”

Since the decommitment, a long list of schools have made contact. Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, California, Arizona State, Georgetown, Kansas, Louisville, Missouri, Florida, and Tulsa are among the schools that have reached out.

“After the AAU season, I might cut my list a little bit,” Dorsey said. “I have no set plans or dates to do anything.”

He's ranked as the No. 12 player in the 247Sports Composite for the class of 2015.
