Oh, wait. I can't even watch it because they aren't nationally televised...maybe once the entire season if they are lucky. I think it will be a rude awakening once he sees the massive difference playing top 25-50 teams and now playing in a place with crappier facilities and facing #200-300 teams. Obviously I hope SJ does well because I'm an alumni (just graduated), but it would really be funny to see SJ as a top 25 team and him at Manhattan going nowhere. His handler totally derailed a once very promising career. This whole thing reeks of shadiness from his handler, the rumors that him and his handler demanded thousands of dollars to negotiate with him, and the fact that he turned down SJ, his hometown team down the road not once but twice. Well, he turned us down the first time and we turned him down the second time really. Lavin may not be the greatest coach but he does not let people manipulate our program and that's nice to see. With Whitehead he refused to hire his high school coach and now with JL he refused to pay the money to talk with him (or so the rumors go).

Lawrence did not want to leave Cincinnati. He committed to UC for a reason, because Mick Cronin will make you a tougher player, and that is exactly what he needed to make it to the NBA. Unfortunately, his father was ill and he decided to leave home and made a good decision to go to Manhattan.

St. Johns signed Chris Obekpa and dealt with his shady handlers which makes your ironic comments about Lawrence the more hilarious.

The funny thing about almost all SJU fans is that they believe that players who choose to go elsewhere do so because of shady recruiting. And yet when CBS sports.com wrote an article 2 years ago showing the results of college coaches who were asked who they perceived as the most dirty recruitment. And 2 SJU players showed up on the list. Now I'm not proclaiming that Lavin and SJU are cheats. But they are perceived as cheats by coaches and other schools.

That's not what we heard. We heard that Lawrence wanted to play a different position and butt heads with Cronin over it. He also didn't receive much PT. So from what we heard, yes he wanted to leave. What was shady about our players' recruitments? Can you name a specific example? I remember Obekpa was very close to signing with Cincy then signed with SJU at the 11th hour. Does that mean it was shady, or he just had a change of heart because his high school was 45 minutes from Queens and decided to stay local? I haven't heard any real speculation in detail. Just that he chose us. I can name specific instances like Whitehead being SJU all the way until the 11th hour when SHU got involved and said they'd hire his coach if he came as a package deal. They reportedly gave St. John's one last chance to match that offer and take Tiny IW's coach, and Lavin supposedly told them to get lost. SHU was willing to take the risk and closed the deal. That's confirmed shady. Lawrence has been well-known as having a very shady handler from both Cincy and SJU fans. There are also the rumors that his handler demanded a ton of money up front just to be able to sit down and chat with them.

I have actual rumors and some confirmed shady business. All you have is speculation.

"To my knowledge, he didn't want to transfer," Davis said. "When he found out that his dad was sick, that's when he made the decision that he wanted to leave. He has never to us said anything negative about Mick or the program. In fact, he was very complimentary toward them. I've known Mick from when I was a high school coach. He does it the right way."

On Obekpa: Everyone around his recruitment knew he had very shady handlers looking for that Nike money. I believe UC did recruit him pretty heavily but about a month or so before his decision I was told that the staff backed off because of the people around him (realizing they were playing with fire). That is why he took that late visit to Oregon right before committing to St. Johns. That is a confirmed fact. Steven Lavin is known as one of the dirtiest recruiters.

What are you talking about, "didn't receive much PT"?

He played 15 mpg as a freshman. That's pretty reasonable even for a 5* freshman when he joins a big time program with depth. Lots of big time players have seen less PT as freshman.

What is "an actual rumor" that makes it not speculation?

Terminology is different everywhere.

My point is that there are specific instances I can point to with IW and JL's recruitments that were dirty. I can specifically say it's floating around that JL's handlers demanded thousands of dollars just for the chance to speak with them and JL. That's a specific example. I have heard no specific examples regarding Lavin or Obekpa. Again, it makes sense that he came to SJU...his HS he played at is only 45 minutes or so from Queens. And he'd get bigger exposure here.

You said Obekpa's handlers wanted Nike money...what does that even mean? Be specific. He also almost left the program but decided to stay at the last second. He sounds more like a kid who has a hard time making decisions than a dirty recruitment.
