Jump to (wrong) conclusions much? I'm just taking the argument that Syracuse isn't at death's door as others here seem to make them out to be. Syracuse has been our best rivalry game throughout recent history and I'd like to keep that going.

I think the difference between Georgetown and Syracuse is that:

- GU's reputation is based on way more than their basketball team...
- it's an outstanding school in one of the world's greatest cities.
- also, GU has shown that they can have some lean hoops years, but bounce back and maintain their reputation as a great hoops school.
- they have a young coach who will be there a while, and who is an excellent recruiter.
- they also have scheduling arrangements with schools like Kansas and Michigan State.
- they also have maintained their northeast presence and strong conference rivalries.
- they also have a hoops "brand" which goes beyond the basketball court, as we saw in "Requiem".
- at least 4 road games, plus the Big East tournament, located in the northeast corridor, each year... and the media and recruiting advantages that come with that. Plus every one of their home games located in the northeast corridor.
- they have stayed in the same conference as their traditional rivals, schools which with which they share a history, a common purpose, a common culture, and a common bond, including the 3 newer schools.

Syracuse is a great school, with an outstanding hoops team...
- they get great recruits and have a pipeline to sports microphones via theircommunications alums.
- outside of that, which admittedly is impressive, they are facing some unknowns in the near future...
- a legendary coach who is close to 70 years old who has been the face of the hoops program for 40 years.
- a set of new rivalries that will need to be jumpstarted, many of which are located 700+ miles away in non-media centers.
- new rivals that fans in the northeast really don't care about and which don't share a common bond with SU.
- a history of several other former conference mates who made similar moves, whose hoops programs are struggling in the lower halves of their conferences to find either success or attention (Boston College, West Virginia, Miami (Fla) for most of the last 10 years)... plus Pitt already having problems recruiting in NYC.
- a handpicked successor who has been waiting for Boeheim to leave for what seems like forever, who has no head coaching experience.
- an arena that is 33+ years old that will need replacement soon.
- no guaranteed games in the northeast corridor, except BC which draws 4k per game.
- picture a couple of lean years under Hopkins... what will be the result? what will be the fans' reaction? how easily can their ship be righted...?

These are all legitimate points that can't be waved off as not being a concern... if you follow sports long enough, you see that every team's success ebbs and flows... West Virginia fans were certain of continued success and attention in the Big 12 with Kansas, Texas, etc, and laughed at similar legitimate concerns like these that had been brought up, but now WVU is lost and forgotten.

Anyway, sorry I'm longwinded here, but these are the reasons that SU has scheduled Villanova, St John's, and is hoping to lock in Georgetown.

Tell me if these quotes from you don't sound like a Hoya "fan" making arguments from a cuse pov:

The idea that Syracuse needs a life raft is ridiculous. They play in probably the top basketball league in the country and get huge exposure through ESPN.

When Boeheim retires they certainly may make a bad hire but it wouldn't kill the program. They can always fire him and hire a new guy. With the transfer landscape as it is, it only takes 2 years to rebuild a roster when you have the sort of resources Syracuse has.

I think you are severely overrating the effect on recruiting that playing one game in a city has.

and the best one so far...
Syracuse isn't at death's door as others here seem to make them out to be.

Gimmie a break DC dude...When cuse left it was the BE that was at death's door. Cuse is supposed to be the school in the superior position already yet it's them trying to keep a presence in these BE markets, why? Because they know what happened to BC, something you may or may not remember. Cuse's formula for success over the past 30+ years had 2 key pillars: JB & the BE. Both of which won't be there within 5 years. Even they can't be sure about their future yet a hoya "fan" is pronouncing all is good in southern canada, c'mon man.

I'm sorry that my views don't fit what some random Seton Hall alum thinks my views as a Georgetown alum should be.

Good stuff  It's all good either way. I was just providing a long time Big East fan pov.

Syracuse is just a bit stronger than BC ever has been. Syracuse will have a presence in NYC no matter what St John's or Seton Hall, or anyone thinks. It's dumb to think anything but that. If Syracuse views Philly or DC exposure as being important- they will get it, even if Nova/Georgetown don't want it.

I mean, this year Syracuse plays St John's at home. But still will have 2 games in MSG in November. That's the problem that folks here don't want to realize- that there's not a damn thing that we can do to stop that for Syracuse. Also, you can bet in a year where Syracuse isn't playing St John's, and they're doing an exempt tourney in Hawaii or something like that- you're going to find Syracuse in that Jimmy V Classic or something of that kind- that would be at MSG. ESPN will make sure of that.

They can only be in the same pre-season tourney every 4 years i believe. I agree they will find a way into MSG but thats not the same as having a presence. The LIRR Orange Alum like to act like they can pack the place every night, which is not the case. They can sell a bunch of tickets once or twice a year at best. Even this year the crowd at the SJU/Cuse game of 17K was split around 10/7 or 9.5/7.5, with most of the Orange in the upper bowl. It was NOT a sellout and for the first 18 minutes of the second half all the chants were coming from the Johnnies fans.

When Cuse played Temple two years ago at the Garden, the attendance was around 14k, and there were many Temple fans in the stand. They need their Big East rivals more than the Big East rivals need them.

big difference though was that year they had a road game at Seton Hall, and the Big East tournament. If Syracuse fans know it's the only chance to get into NYC, going to make a much bigger difference.

You are right- but there's 3 pre-season tournaments going into MSG each year now. Having 1-2 games at MSG or Barclay's for them is all they need each year. That's all they need. That's all they had before when they were in the BE.
