I don't know about the author, but I don't think Marquette and UNLV are bad jobs at all. (I always liked Vegas b/c Tark just told the NCAA to GTFO).

I'm not a Marquette fan, but that's some crap. ESPN is trying real hard to make the Big East disappear...but I don't think they can pull it off.

Interesting set of schools. I don't totally agree that all of the bottom feeders are bad jobs, simply because the expectations for success aren't there. A school that has been good like a Boston College, sure...but for somebody like TCU where basketball is an afterthought, it seems like it wouldn't be as bad a job as the record dictates. I would put a few schools with unrealistic expectations (Mizzou, I'm looking right at you) on the list too. Adding in the A-10, really the only bad job I see is the one at Fordham. Bonaventure would have been on the list post-scandal, but I think Schmidt is past that. From talking to Depaul fans, I don't think that is a "bad" job at all...the right coach could realize a ton of success for the Blue Demons. Who that is, I have no idea.

Relax. The nice thing is this time of year a lot of people aren't reading about college bball on ESPN. I do admit that despite their hostility towards the BE, I do enjoy their coverage. That article was bad though.

I suppose it depends what you are looking for. In my opinion coaches want to win and a bad job would be a place where you couldn't win. So to me bad jobs are ones where the odds are stacked against you because you have no tradition of success and or are at a recruiting disadvantage, and/or the fans/administration do not care. Obviously there are some mitigating circumstances, such as pay. I'd have more SEC schools on there otherwise, but hey at least you can collect a good pay check before getting canned down there. The reason Vanderbilt is on there is because they have to compete in the SEC with their higher academic restrictions compared to the rest of the league. I had Fordham on my original list as well as some MWC like Airforce and San Jose St.

There is a story on their web today about bad coaching jobs. One of them, they claim, is Marquette. And among the reasons given is that they lack the lucrative TV deal commanded by the old Big East conference. What a joke! Here is the link: http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketb ... basketball.

Yes, indeed, this was a very strange statement when the fact is that the New Big East schools make far more money with their Fox contract than they did under the old Big East TV deal. Lack of TV revenue is precisely why all those football schools left as well. No one has ever before described that contract as "lucrative".

The idea of writing an article on bad jobs is ridiculous. Any job is a bad job until the right coach was there. Was anyone pushing SMU as a good job before Larry Brown went there? Indiana is supposed do be a great job but they've had 3 coaches since their last Final Four with nothing to show for it. Matt Dougherty proved that not everyone can make it at North Carolina.
