Xavier v. UC Game

The Cincinnati home games are controlled by ESPN, the Xavier home games are controlled by FS1. I know Mick Cronin worked hard to make sure, when on ESPN, the game would be featured on ESPN's Rivalry Week along sides the classic rivalries like UK-Florida, Duke-UNC, Syracuse-Pitt, etc..

I personally like that, this is one of the best rivalries in college basketball but it isn't treated as such due to the lack of spotlight on the game since Huggins left us.

Agreed. This game can and should grow beyond the Huggins effect in years to come.

I'm glad they're putting it on Rivalry Week. You're right, that's where it belongs.

I have my BA from XU and my MA from UC so I can appreciate both campus locations and campus arenas. This is the biggest moneymaker for both schools and so I believe it should be maintained at the bank arena on the riverfront. XU's arena holds 10,000, UC's arena holds 13,000 and the bank arena holds 17,000. More money and more hype for all if it is held downtown.

The city of Cincinnati needs to figure out what they want to do with US Bank Arena. The place needs a major overhaul to be on pace with competitors in Louisville, Columbus and Indianapolis or it will continue to get passed over for major concerts and events (primarily the NCAA Tournament). Cincinnati is consistently a top 5 market for NCAA tournament TV ratings (along with Columbus, Dayton and Louisville) so there NO excuse for us not to host an NCAA tournament site.

In an ideal world US Bank is renovated into a state of the art arena that can host the aforementioned events, but that might require Cincinnati as a permanent tenant which is a contentious topic amongst UC fans. Either way, University of Cincinnati basketball badly needs an upgrade in the arena and they might just have to take the quickest and cheapest option.

First off, regarding the hype, I can't speak for UC fans, but a vast majority of Xavier fans HATED it being at US Bank and many refused to go. Capacity may be greater but it was nowhere near full, whereas both schools sellout at home and create amazing atmospheres.

Money wise, DEFINITELY not the case. You have to pay to rent out US Bank, not cheap. You also don't get the concession money that you would normally get at your home arena. When downtown they also had an agreement to donate a % of ticket sales to the Freedom Center, maybe that could be gotten rid of, but who knows. After Freedom Center gets its cut, then the two school have to split the ticket sales, which is easily going to be less than what you would net every other year hosting a home game. Also, with it being at US Bank, it is not included in the season ticket package, which I know upset a lot of people. Having UC as a home game at Cintas definitely raises the value of a Xavier season ticket package.

In general, I didn't hate the game at US Bank as much as I thought It would (I attended both years) but having the game on campus is extremely beneficial for both schools for many reasons and I'm very happy they made the move back.

There was not that many people at that game this past season. I'm not going to believe the attendance figures they announced considering some of the upper bowl was covered.

Was the atmosphere cool? Yeah, I actually enjoyed having both sets of fans cheering the teams on. However, I would much prefer a home atmosphere.

To your neutral/home point, the committee certainly favors road wins over neutral wins, so a win at UC is much better for X than down at US Bank, or vice versa. The point is, there is really no logical or financial reason in continuing the game downtown. I'm glad it's back on campus and back with the real name.

I am really bummed that the game won't be in February during X years. Doesn't Fox realize how much more important games are after NFL and NCAAFB are over?

I can't take credit for someone else's work.

I busted out laughing as well when the "Lannister" line came up. Many Xavier fans refer to Cronin as the YTG: Yellow Toothed Gnome. It's possibly to the point of not regarding UC in a negative fashion as much as it is about focusing on Cronin acting like such a douchebag most of the time.
