Different perspective on St. Johns

SJU87, where was UConn before Calhoun? They were a nowhere program. Lavin isn't building St. John's from scratch. It isn't like we just invited Iona into the Big East here. That is really not a good argument.

Villanova missed the tournament in 2012 and had a losing record. The next year they were back in. That is rebuilding. Having 4 guys jump ship within 2 weeks is a wreckage. You guys haven't won a tournament game since 2000. How much more patience do you want. And UNC?????? Are you kidding??????? They were IN the tournament this year and have won 2 national championships within the last decade. I mean come on.

It'll take some time to rebuild St. John's. Lavin basically has had one recruiting class since coming here and sometimes a recruiting class doesn't pan out. Look at North Carolina and the recruits they get and they've been up and down .
I hope St. John's doesn't fire coaches like George Steinbrenner fired managers. Lavin can recruit and that's his biggest strength. Just be patient. Jim Calhoun didn't build the UCONN program overnight.

This is on Lavin. He knew there was definitely 3 seniors leaving, so why couldn`t he get atleast 2 top 75 recruits here this year instead of just focusing on 15? Now people are leaving and now we`re scrambling to bring in replacements.
2 recruits in 2 years isn`t some bang up recruiting job by a so called recruiting ace.

He`ll be coaching next year, but next April with 1 year left on his contract, they`ll have no choice but to fire or extend him.

I guess I`ll be on board next year but only if Jordan and Harrison both stay, I gotta have something to watch.

All I can say is that I have no idea what is wrong with the SJU program but it seems to be the same as the Mets. No matter what you do, no matter what players or coaches you bring in, somehow it just seems there is a dark cloud always above. Can't put my finger on it but it's just a negative program that seems to be headed nowhere. I hate to say it but I think the days of SJU being a constant top 25 and tourney berth team are over. As much as I hate to say it, this might be a team that only makes the tourney a few times each decade if that. Basically mid-major like.

I'd love nothing more than for this program to prove me dead wrong, but I think this program peaked in 1985 and right now it seems like making the tourney is impossible let alone being ranked in the top 25 or making a run in the tourney. You can't blame the fans for the negativity either. You reap what you sow.

The only good news is news that the front runner to head the school is a lay person, who attended Holy Cross and Harvard, and is the current dean of the law school. It is not a coincidence that the other Vincentian school in the conference is De Paul.

The reason SJ is only seen as an average academic school is because the school accepts kids from the inner-city en masse attending college for the first time in their entire families. SJ is not trying to be selective. They accept people from poverty and poor grades while other schools don't.

I think SJ should stop caring so much about being diverse and bringing in kids from inner cities and start becoming much more selective. We get tons of applications…we can definitely narrow it down. Yes the leadership didn't help, but SJ is not designed to be selective. I hope it will be very soon though.

Lavin has 2 years left on his deal...takes him through the 2015-2016

Masiello will get fired from Manhattan for the resume fiasco.

St John's should let Lavin coach out his contract and then hire Masiello...by that time, people will have forgiven/forgotten about the resume incident (like how George O'Leary lied on his resume to ND and then a few years later went to UCF)

Masiello can recruit NYC. look at Manhattan's roster. almost all of the players are from one of the boroughs.

Masiello is not being fired by Manhattan. They have completed their internal investigation. They have announced that he is 10 credits short of his degree and that he is indefinitely suspended until he completes the missing 10 credits. It is expected that he will complete the necessary course work this summer. Upon completion, he will be welcomed back as Manhattan coach.

RIght now, no one - including St. John's - will touch Masiello. If he is smart - and I think he is - he will thank his lucky stars that Manhattan is taking him back instead of kicking him to the curb. They could have ruined his career and his reputation. Instead, they have offered him a path to rehabilitation - with full pay and a chance to get his career back on track. He should be eternally grateful to them for their understanding.

Masiello's plans for the future should include:

1. Complete 1@ credits of course work and get his degree.
2. Sweep us soul searching and self reflection.
3. Maintain a low profile for a few years
4. Stay at Manhattan and win a lot of games

If he does all that, he may be ready to be considered for another big job in 3-4 years. Or he may stay at Manhattan and do what he once promised - make them the Gonzaga of the East.
