Some of those concerns are legitimate, but when you just look at that list its a good feeling. There is a clear division of which conferences the top players want to play in, and the BE is one of them.
Another thing that I like is that while we may not have a lot of top 20 guys, we have a lot of guys 20-100.
That elite talent is likely NBA talent which will be in college for 1-2 years. Most of the guys coming to the BE are top players, but likely stay in school 3-4 years (I prefer experience/stability).

Many have said the first year of the conference is crucial for image and perception, I agree. We would be in a lot of trouble if we had 5 top 100 kids coming in this year...as we would have to fight against the grain. Having top guys in the first year will make it easier to get top kids in the upcoming years. We are in a good spot, and the 2014 class is crucial to the league. The BEast brand and image will be molded on how good these kids are, how they develop, and how the teams look like after the next 4 years. These first 5 years (2018 class) will likely lay the groundwork for the permanent future of the conference on a national scale.

One reason I think next year is so crucial for recruiting is because let's say for discussions sake that we got only 8 top 100 recruits in 2015....

think about the narrative.... They got good recruits last year, but then they got hidden on FS1 and had a bad year, and now recruiting goes into the tank. That's not good.

That's why I'm saying if we have as good of a class in 2015, then that will make it easier in the upcoming years. They won't be able to use that narrative on us.

Also, I don't think we have 5 years to lay the groundwork. If we have years like this next 1-2 years, it's not good.

Finally, I think a lot of the big east does hinge on FS1 improving. We can't have our title game getting .5 ratings. I mean think about this- next year Pac 12 is even on ESPN. We're the only conference out of the top 10 conferences not on ESPN or CBS for the title game. If we get another .5 and everyone else gets at least a 1, that's not good.

The 2015 class is going to be a lot clearer in terms of the new reality. Right now, ESPN has top 60, and only 1 BE recruit so far- a guy for Marquette. 11 of the top 60 have committeed so far. Rivals has top 150, and we have 4, including the 1 for Marquette. (I say Marquette just because of the coaching change- any coaching change and the recruits could flip real easily). I don't know if that's a typical number at this point or not quite frankly.

The one other thing that hurts us is we're not getting a lot of the top tier players. I mean, right now in the top 20 we have 1 player for 2014.

Also, quite frankly, recruiting ratings a lot of times are a joke. You'll look at lists 4-5 years from now and just shake your head at the ratings.

I'd much rather be in the Big East's position right now recruiting wise than not, but it's not an absolute guarantee for sucess in the future.

Stever you need to spend some quality time with a loved one, or have a drink or something...

Using your own logic let's take a closer look at 2015. 22 kids on that Rivals list have committed. 4 of them are BE kids. I'm no math whiz but that represents 18.2% of the list. 18%+. If we are comparing ourselves to the following leagues: ACC, B1G, PAC12, BIG12, SEC--not to mention the AAC, A-10, MWC, etc.) it would be impossible for many of these conferences to match that %. And oh by the way we have 10 schools and many of the others have many more. And stop with the not getting the top talent crap. Calipari and Self are loading up on one-and dones, and they are no better than a team full of 3rd and 4th year players who have developed in a system. Nova had Tim Thomas for one year. It was fun thinking he was going to come in and dominate as he was the #2 recruit that year behind Kobe. Give me a Dante Cunningham over him every day of the week and twice on Sunday. The BE will not suffer by not getting one and dones. In fact I'm concerned that the kid that SHU is getting might hurt the program more than help if he is a one and done. If the BE grabs 10-12 Top 100 kids a year, they will be more than fine. 2014 follows that script and 2015 is off to a good start.

Think before you post man and stop with the sky is falling routine. It's one thing to say that you are concerned b/c we had a less-than-expected first year, but you make a definitive statement that our recruiting is going to suffer and point to 2015. When we already see 4 Top 100 recruits (out of 22 who have committed), and many more targeted, your argument looks foolish. You are truly exhausting with your doom and gloom.

Calipari is still playing this year and has a national championship in the last 3 years. They win vs Louisville and they could easily win the title again.

Looking at the list, Big Ten has 7 guys already.

If 2015 keeps up, fine that's great. I just feel like that's the more important year(especially now coming off the year we just had on the floor). I don't think I've ever said definitely that our recruiting is going to suffer. I've just said that 2015 is a far more of a barometer for recruiting than 2014 is. I think that's fair. All the recruits coming in were recruited in the new lay of the land that is the 2014 Big East. All were fully aware of FS1- and not being on ESPN regularly. That's all I've said and will continue to say.

I'm no genius, but I should be able to understand a simple point, so let me take a stab at it.

1. The BE should be concerned that it's not getting a lot of top 20 players
2. Recruiting ratings are a joke that just leave you shaking your head.

Have I got that right?

I revised this analysis to exclude top 20 recruits under the assumption that they won't be 3-4 year players. Good news is that the BE loses only one player but the bass news is that SHU lose Whitehead!

BE 1.30 per team
ACC 1.13
B10 0.86
SEC 0.79

This analysis suggests an even better outcome for BE teams.

Hmmm.........so recruiting ratings I guess don't matter to Stever. While I agree that they aren't the gospel (McDermott was a 2/3 star recruit), it's better than not having them. If the Big East only had 4 recruits in the top 100 like the AAC, I guarantee you Stever would be using it as ammunition for why the Big East is gonna fail.

No it's not...The BE doesn't have to recruit at this same level every season to be great. That's for the Kentucky's, etc who loose talent b/c of 1 and doner's. Recruiting is only the first step, next is talent & physical development. 2015 will be more about the 2014 class becoming sophomores for most BE schools, than plugging holes via recruiting. Take Seton Hall, we're not going to need 5 more top recruits in 2015, maybe 1 or 2 (a big man), Xavier same, PC same, etc.

The simple fact that a 10 team league is bringing in 14 top 100 players is exactly why 2015 won't be as good, these same guys are going to be getting minutes in 2015. The 2014 recruiting class is way more important than you are giving credit for because it has set the foundation for the next 3-4 years for the league.

Whoa, Nellie! :o

Bringing in 14 quality recruits in a season to a 10 team league - or even 24 of the ESPN top 150 - doesn't leave the conference set for years to come. There's still going to be a need for more quality recruits annually.
