Shaka Smart to Marquette

The home for Big East hoops

Adam Finkelstein tweets:

"Shaka Smart spoke to VCU commits & their coaches yesterday & assured them he isn't going anywhere"

He is the ESPN College a Recruiting Nation writer.

Someone asked how the story happened:

" Same way it gets started every year. Just because a school is pursuing him doesn't mean he's going".

Again like I said, I trust my one guy. VCU is a basketball only school, and I believe Shaka's ultimate goal is to have the program join the Big East.

That Twitter account has already been suspended so it was a hoax. I am not saying Shaka will not end up at Marquette but it certainly isn't a done deal as of yet. Some people are reporting Marquette hasn't even been able to speak with him yet. Gotta love the internet! If MU doesn't end up with Shaka they will end up getting Howland or somebody else that will do well. I am not worried. Shaka would still be phenomenal though.

Someone on Redmen.com said that Shaka just told recruits not to worry and he is definitely staying at VCU.

Yup he told his 2014 class, and their coaches are some of Finelsteins recruiting sources.

It was me. I said that HAVOC was a gimmick. Honestly (you may not believe me here) I still think it is a gimmick. You think Cotton wouldn't eat that alive? Khalif Wyatt from Temple made HAVOC look like [I can't think of anything clever]!

If Shaka comes, I will be very happy. Though I really we wish we had offered Howland. We still might and I hope it's not too late. Worst case scenario is that Shaka stays at VCU and Howland goes to Wake. The ACC gains in strength and we (MU/BEast) are left with some no-name (relatively speaking).

In any case, if Shaka does come to MU and actually implements HAVOC and it works. Well, then, I will eat serious crow--I will change my handle and avatar to whatever you want for the entirety of next season.

I don't think Cotton would have been able to go 40 minutes against it, no.

And let's look at this. Georgetown had 26 turnovers against Havoc. In the entire BE season, they never had more than 18 turnovers the entire year.

I totally agree about your worst case scenario- err- actually worst case would be Mack takes Wake, Smart stays at VCU, and Howland doesn't go back into coaching this year. That takes from last year our 5 best coaches and leaves us with Wright and JT3. Stevens, Mack, and Buzz all gone. And still leaves Smart at VCU which is just as much of a problem if you know what I mean.

One other thing- if Smart doesn't leave VCU or even worse goes to Wake- it's going to make Marquette/Big East look that much weaker after all these rumors saying it's a done deal etc.

If he signs with Marquette, he could be in the Big East tomorrow... :D

Assuming this is his new account it looks like Shaka Smart is announcing his new job:
