This is so classicly jacked up. So many people (including myself) willing to accept twitter verse reports as fact. Oh well, lesson learned.

You guys have a great program, if you wind up keeping him then congrats to you. But you can't really blame us for getting excited about the possibility.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

this would completely shock me...no offense to Marquette fans, but why he would pass on UCLA last year and be willing to accept Marquette now?

some are touting this as a homecoming...according to this WP article, it seems like he endured a lot of racism growing up in Oregon, WI (suburban Madison), so I'm not sure he's nostalgic for his boyhood state

Easy, winning coaches get fired from UCLA. They have an unrealistic idea about their program and standing in college basketball. Marquette is a good program that spends a TON of money on it's program and doesn't have to compete with FBS FB for revenue and support from the school. They were paying Buzz 3 mil a year and he had a private jet for recruiting purposes. Also Smart is from WI so it all makes a LOT more sense than UCLA.

Oh and if this happens then VCU's chances of joining the Big East go with him.

I haven't seen anything definitive on either end. So who knows.

He could have his cake and eat in too...If he goes to UCLA, does poorly or does well but just doesn't have success that meets their unrealistic expectations and ultimately gets fired after a few seasons, he can just come back and get a big east job anyway...look at the last two UCLA coaches before Alford. Obviously don't have to tell you, but Lavin landed on his feet at St. Johns and Ben Howland is rumored to be in the mix for Marquette and was also rumored for DePaul a few weeks ago.

Shaka currently makes about 1.6 million a year, also includes the use of a private jet for recruiting. He turned down a hire contract, to increase the salary of his assistants. He was last offered 2.5 million by Illinois. I'm fairly certain he's staying, but if this decision is being made, it's not about the money and all about the location of Marquette being in Wisconsin, and being a basketball only school.
