Secondly, no player nor coach is bigger than our conference. No player nor coach is bigger than New York, Phila, DC, Chicago and the rest. Buzz was great for the conference, but we'll move on. If Gregg Marshall signs up, it'll be fantastic. Nothing wrong with some new blood in the conference. Marquette makes BOATLOADS of money, so they'll be fine.

Just stop freakin repeating your opinion like it's freakin gospel.

He's like that bad background music (michael bolton/kenny g) when some bank has me on hold...anyway what does a TV deal have to do with "reportedly" being a classless @ss on the way out.

Marc Marotta, a former Marquette basketball star, prominent supporter of the basketball program and chairman of the BMO Harris Bradley Center board of directors, said Friday that Buzz Williams' decision to leave for Virginia Tech was a mistake.

"For him to leave Marquette is one of the most idiotic moves I've ever seen anyone make," Marotta said. "I like Buzz but this is a move that is inexplicable."

Williams reportedly told his players late Friday afternoon of his decision. By then, his Twitter page had already been changed to list him as the Virginia Tech head coach, and feature a picture of the Hokies home basketball court. He also had changed the colors of his "Team Williams" logo above his name to match the Tech school colors.

The tv argument is silly. The big ten has its own network like the BE and fs1. Can't imagine it was any factor. He is an eccentric guy. So who knows what motivated this. Could be the administration or he just wanted something new to build his own. The ACC is a challenging place to do it. Marq fans could clue us in on his affection for the community.

Big Ten has it's own network yes, but they have like 4-5 games a week on ESPN every single week as well. The ESPN piece is huge, something a lot here want to completely ignore.

I'm sure Greg Marshall took time away from preparing for his team's game tonight to put himself in the running for Marquette. Didn't happen!! Someone is just stirring the pot unnecessarily at this time.

I'm also sure that IU would be glad to give Marquette Tom Crean back. He has worn out his welcome in Bloomington.

Am I the only one who doesn't think this is that big of a loss?

I think from a coaching perspective, maybe not. Mentally though- did the Big East in the early 80's lose a coach like this to the ACC?

I mean, think about this- would we see a Bennett going from UVA to DePaul? This makes us look like we're a stepping stone to the P5 conferences. That's the bad thing about this move. .

Coming from an A10 fan like Stever, I'm not that worried.

I'm shocked to hear this news!

It may be that buzz had started to believe his own press clippings. Always a mistake.

I always thought that Buzz was overrated as a coach by some here. Never thought he was a great recruiter. He's a good coach but not great IMO. IF Gregg Marshall is interested, he would be a great choice and an upgrade.

If this report about him leaving is true, it's a real dumb move by Buzz unless something had become so intolerable for him at Marquette that staying there was not an option. For anyone not coaching at a school named North Carolina, Duke, Syracuse, Louisville, or Notre Dame, the ACC is the graveyard of college basketball coaches. Pete Gillen had great success at Xavier, took Providence to the Elite 8, and then fell on his face at Virginia.

Posters here talk a lot about institutional fit when it comes to expansion. I think institutional fit is at least as important when hiring coaches. Continuing with the Pete Gillen example, I went to high school with Pete at a boys' Jesuit high school in Brooklyn. He went on to Fairfield. His first job in the business was coaching 8th graders at a Catholic Grammat school. He was an assistant at Notre Dame and Villanova (?). He was a Catholic school guy, but I think he went to Virginia for bigger money, a bigger budget, and better facilities. A lot of good it did him.

Sometimes the schools need to know if the person they hire is a good fit. Buzz may just feel more comfortable at a southern school. Maybe he didn't feel comfortable in a Catholic atmosphere. (I don't know his religious affiliation if any,) Maybe the admissions office was a problem for him recruiting. Whatever the reason, he obviously wanted to move on.

Ed Cooley at PC is a great fit. I doubt he'll ever leave. Jay Wright is a great fit at Villanova JT III is a great fit at Georgetown. Roy Williams at North Carolina is a great fit. Buzz Williams may simply not have been a great fit at Marquette regardless of how good a coach he is.
