NIT

One thing interesting is I think we're all assuming we'll get 7 in the NCAA/NIT. I'm not so sure about the NIT. Right now, already 9 teams are locked into the NIT from the smaller conferences- #1 seeds in conferences are guaranteed NIT spots if they lose in conference tourney(13/32 have played so far). Leaves only 23 spots at the most for the other schools. Marquette could be a victim of this if they lose vs Xavier. Especially in some like the MAC or WAC where the #1 seed probably isn't the best team even.

Bracketmatrix also runs an NIT projection. As of today, the Big East teams projected to be in the NIT were

Marquette as a #3 Seed in the Midwest vs. Richmond.
St. John's as a #2 seed in the West vs. Middle Tennessee
Georgetown as a #1 Seed in the East vs. Vermont
Providence as the #2 Seed in the South vs. Oregon State

(Assuming the names of the regions as they're not listed, and the #1 seeds in each region are Minnesota, Arkansas, Georgetown, and Florida State).

On average, nine regular season conference winners qualify automatically for the NIT, so if you're a 6 seed or below, you have reason to worry about getting bumped.
Automatic qualifiers this year include

Boston University (Patriot League)
Davidson (Southern Conference
Vermont (America East)
High Point (Big South)
Iona (MAAC)
Murray State (OVC)
Robert Morris (NEC)
Southern (SWAC)*
UW-Green Bay (Horizon League)

*= Southern is ineligible for postseason play

Al McGuire: "What is this?"
Waiter: "Mr. McGuire, that is a cull lobster. Sometimes when the lobsters are in the tank, they fight. This one lost a claw."
Al McGuire: "Well then take this one away and bring me the winner."

For what it's worth, Bracket Matrix has an NIT bracket also. They have Georgetown in as 1 seed, Providence and St. Johns as 2's and Marquette as a 3.

Oregon State appears to be first on the NIT bubble, followed by Washington, Richmond and St. Mary's. Yes, all four of those could get the axe based on the formula, which I think is a good one.
