Couldn't ask for better opportunities for Starks and Rivera. Unless they can win the next two against Creighton and Villanova, it looks like NIT for Georgetown.

In looking at remaining schedules, it strikes me that Marquette could burst the bubble for three Big East teams, Georgetown, St Johns and Providence, and leave us with only 3 NCAA tourney participants....

Definitely, UNLESS, Marquette can go on a run and win their next 3 and a game in the BET. That's an almost impossible task, otherwise, they will just be helping Big East teams get into the NIT.

With the loss of Whittington and Josh Smith, the Hoyas don't have anyone over 6'5" that can score. The three guards scored 59 points and everyone else scored 14 points tonight.

Tonight had the feel of an elimination game, and with Georgetown in Lunardi's First Four out heading into tonight, then losing, then with Creighton and Villanova next week, that seems to be what it looks like.

Makes me wonder what happens if Marquette goes 2-1 next week, and wins one game at MSG. That would put the Warriors at 20-12, and probably with a third-place Big East finish (Xavier has to play Creighton and Villanova, and Marquette has the tiebreaker over Xavier for now). You may be in Dayton. You may not even be in, but you'll be in the conversation with that kind of finish.

From my perspective, Sunday is House Money. Go to Wells Fargo and see what happens. If you can pull of a smash-and-grab, you're in great position. If not, you only lose a game you were expected to lose anyway, and then you get a quick turnaround for a winnable game at Providence, and then finish at home on Senior Day against a St. John's team who despite being touted as the league's hottest team, and who may have the best individual talent in the conference, is 1-5 vs. the RPI Top 100 away from home. Providence and St. John's are both in Lunardi's "Last 4 in" right now. If Marquette beats them both next week, and finishes above them in the conference, they'll have played their way into the conversation.

After the St. John's game at MSG, Buzz Williams said he believed a 7-2 finish might be enough to send Marquette dancing. At the time, a lot of eyes were rolled, as MU was 12-10 and had just been run out of the gym by the Johnnies. But since then, they've gone 5-1, with the only loss coming to league-leading Creighton, and the victories including some tough, old-fashioned, grind-it-out wins over Butler, Seton Hall, Xavier, DePaul, and Georgetown.

I'm not getting my hopes up just yet, but I'm daring to dream.
Al McGuire: "What is this?"
Waiter: "Mr. McGuire, that is a cull lobster. Sometimes when the lobsters are in the tank, they fight. This one lost a claw."
Al McGuire: "Well then take this one away and bring me the winner."

If I were betting on it, I'd say we get four bids, with Creighton, Villanova, Xavier and either Providence or Marquette. Of course, I hope we get to 5 somehow, but it doesn't seem likely.

I would tend to agree.

At the same time however, I am beginning to believe more and more that someone other than Creighton and Nova will win the auto bid in NYC.

I don't know about the auto bid. Right now, only PC and St John's have beaten either of those 2 teams this year.

Tonight is a huge game with Providence. A loss, and 3 becomes a very real possibility. Think worst case right now is 3, with Xavier being in the play in game. 5 doesn't seem doable unless there's an upset of Creighton or Villanova- and even then, if it's the wrong team doing the upset may not be enough.

Things don't look good for Georgetown, but I'm not writing them off yet. This is the same team that beat Michigan State, Providence, and Xavier without Josh Smith. They played Marquette tough last night on the road. They get played a close game against Villanova last time and get Creighton at home. When they're on their game, they're a very dangerous team.

Last night was a tough loss, a missed opportunity. But it was a game they weren't supposed to win and they showed up anyway, giving Marquette all they could handle. They have 2 more opportunities before the season ends. Will they win them? Not likely. But if they could win even one of them, it would change the conversation going into the Big East tournament.

Marquette won a game they were supposed to win. They have a lot of work left to do to get into the tournament conversation. They also have opportunities. They need to run the table in the regular season just to get on the bubble. Villanova and Providence are big opportunities for them. We'll see if they can take advantage of them.
